Impreza 2.0 GX?

Whats the standard 2.0 GX Impreza / GX Sport like to live with / drive? I've been under the impression they are pretty slow considering, and can be quite thirsty compared to other cars in the same performance class? My boyfriend is looking at all possibilities for when he comes to replacing his current car, and happens to like the look of these. He would consider the turbo too depending on running costs, but most seem to be dogs for that price range. (other cars on the list are astra bertone coupe, celica, saab 9-3 aero, maybe the alfa 156) He'd be paying around the £3000 mark for an early 00's, maybe 2001 model (either the classic style or the bugeye, maybe the newer facelift if any came into budget over summer). Just wondered what information on them any of you guys may have.

slow and thirsty. you should be able to get a decent classic for £3k, sportwagons tend to be in better condition and cheaper.

Real Disappointment with the impreza badge. My brother had one and realized its limits very quickly and his reason for getting one was purely because he couldnt get insured on the turbo. More thirsty than my sisters old 2l focus, but the performance and drive was quite similar.
