starting problem wrx import
Discussion
had a burst water pipe last mounth, managed to get home after afew water stops.changed the pipe and low and behold an air lock, tried my best but couldnt quite get all the air out.after a visit to the local garage and 60 quid lighter job done until the next morning, normaly it starts first time but after a few turns it finally started and ran like a bag of poo until it had warmed up next day the same so back to the garage not a happy chap he said he cant pin point the problem so here i am again asking for help.cheers
Get your ECU reset, run it for a couple of hours and soon enough it will be back up to full power after a bit of ECU learning. Once you're happy it's running as it should be at normal operating temp put the car away and go back to it the next morning. If it starts first time and runs as you would expect then all is well.
If not it could be the coolant temp sensor playing up. Usually when that starts playing up your car runs rough until it's wamed up. As soon as it's warm the problem goes away. Also do the usual and check the sparkplugs look ok, aren't fouled and are gapped correctly.
Difficult to say what's going on really without plugging in and doing a diagnostic from cold to see what the engine is doing as it warms up.
Good luck

Stuff about checking ECU first.
This, i went through lots of man hours, various sensors and a new set of sparks until my Scooby finally died on the way to work. ECU reset and it worked again.Worth mentioning that if it is below 5c or very damp it sometimes takes mine about 30seconds with the key turned in the ignition before it fires up and runs a little lumpy for a few seconds before sorting itself out.
You're in Suffolk and i'm in Northants. I'd be happy to lend a hand if i'm not mapping and if you're coming this way sometime. If you go to a Subaru dealer they are going to charge you £25 plus to reset your ECU unless you know them.
Alternatively you could get yourself a handheld diagnostic device off fleabay. The type that can read and clear error codes. That will do at a basic level to reset your ECU but it won't be much good as a proper diagnostic device that allows you to log problems in real-time while driving, and then play the the log back afterwards to try and pinpoint the problem.
Hope this helps.

Hello fellow Suffolk person
I seem to remember yours is an early WRX, yes?
If so you don't need to do use the OBDII port, just follow the instructions here.

Hmm very odd I've had no such problems.
If your looking to have some work done by people who know Subaru engines, you could try AMR Motors in Exning. They stick Subaru engine in VW Camper vans so know their way around the EJ engine. http://www.tsrengineconversions.co.uk/
The other other people to speak to would be Frost Motorsport in Ipswich http://www.fmsauto.co.uk/ bit further away but Rindy Frost really knows his stuff and comes highly recomended.
