I recently bought an EVO VI and when you get to around 35 MPH a noise appears from the rear.

It sounds a bit as if you were towing a trailer or similar to being in an aircraft!

The car is perfect below this speed.

I'm hoping it's the rear wing, but it's not been messed around with and I can't see a car being sold from new with a noise like this. I'm paranoid it's the dif or something worse, so any input would be great!

Thanks in advance....

I doubt its the wing , mine doesnt do it , id look at the tyres on the back , perhaps they have worn unevenly or something

are you sure its not just tyre noise as evo's have very little sound proofing ?

Yes it does sound like major tyre noise BUT i have a Type R Impreza too and it has no underseal or sound proofing and its nowhere near as bad. Thanks

I would say tyres or maybe a wheel bearing as when you are moving along rumbles and wind sound very similar

Ok thanks for the info. I never realised tyres could make or cause so much road noise?

The AYC grumbles when knackered.

Check out the MLR forum for an answer - there is very little they don't know about lancers on that site.

My VIIRS - so no sound deadening - is surprisingly quiet. I doubt at those speeds it is likely to be the either tyres or wing. Mine makes very little noise.

The AYC pump /diffs are known problems so it could well be this. Unfortunately, they can be expensive an expensive fix.

A good excuse to swap to an RS diff though - it's an LSD rather than an AYC so much simpler and more robust.

Oh, nearly forgot - you don't need to be a member to search previous posts. There will be dozens of strange noise related ones to read through.

You're right. Endless threads on road noise etc. Most people say it's the tyres so ill keep my fingers crossed. Will get it up on a ramp soon and check the wheel bearing and change the diff oil too.

Fingers crossed for you.

By the way, a word of caution re oil changes and the AYC oil circuit. You're supposed to use a MUT II widget to do the job. http://www.lancerregister.com/showthread.php?t=333...

You only need the mut to bleed the ayc , you can change the diff oil seperatly

Update... Had dif oil along with gearbox and ayc all changed and noise still there

get to about 30 and it sounds like im towing a horse box!

a guy from a garage (not a specialist) said it may well be the wheel bearing but there is little or no free play when its jacked up.

there is no noise below 30 either.

i read on the lancer forums where people have presumed wheel bearings only to find out it was road noise.

anyone had a rear bearing go? do they make a noise at lower speeds?

i had one got on a scooby and it squeeked even at walking speed.

Can you record the noise on a vid clip and stick it up on the MLR. Failing that, go to a specialist. They're not exactly rare in the UK.

Have you tried driving on smooth, freshly laid tarmac to see if the sounds is still there or changes in anyway?

There is a noticeable noise in my VIII with semi-slick tyres fitted compared to normal road tyres.

It sounds like a very distant roar, a bit like the sound of a jumbo jet at very high altitude on a still clear day, but constant.
