Hi,
Looking for a new car in the next few months. I'm on a £3k budget and I'm after the best bang for the buck (performance and style wise) with a few other conditions, max insurance group of 17 (Only 20 with 2 years NCB), something that isn't a money pit would be nice so aiming for cars with 80K or less mileage.
First 2 cars I've looked at are Honda Preludes and Toyota MR2s which seem nice but would like a few more suggestions to see if there's anything I've not thought of yet.

Prelude 2.2VTI 1999-2001 model with red top engine (200bhp). UK car as insurance is cheaper, and DONT BUY a Tiptronic. Manual is a better bet. fantastic cars. I have one now and have had 4 Ludes.
Subaru Impreza turbo, as later model as possible, avoid imports for insurance reasons. A nice 51 plate WRX (Bug eye) sold on ebay at the weekend for just over £2100 with 100k miles on. Well within your budget. Ins grp 17.
Ive had both.
MR2 I wouldnt bother unless its a rev 3 turbo, these are out of your price range and imports so insurance expensive. If its not out of your price range its probably not worth having.
Ive had one too.

Best bang for the buck has surely got to be a mid-90s classic impreza turbo, but somehow I think insurance may be your problem on that one !!!
If you wanted to build up to it then a lot of people buy a newage sport (non-turbo), build up some NCB and then jump in a turbo a year later !

I think the Clio Sports represent fantastic value for money in terms of what they offer. I'm sure a decent mk1 172 could be had for £3k, and would blow any other similarly priced Jap hatch into the weeds.
Does it have to be Jap?

Have a look at this site if you want to compare performance statistics - tis a useful reference when comparing:
http://www.letstorquebhp.com/fwd.asp
Change between FWD/RWD/AWD to see different models. manufacturers stats are then used to interpolate 1/4 mile times etc. Very interesting to see the kerb weights too !

Ha ha , well if insurance isnt an issue as it is not for me, a Pulsar GTIR, Integra Type R, Impreza WRX hatch can all be had for this budget have a hatch and will certainly not get blown into the weeds by a French girls car. Nicole?Does it have to be Jap?

Agreed.
The site I posted backs this up to.

In what sense are they better though? That they are slightly faster in a straight line? Pulsar's break once a week and handle like pigs, and a £3k Imprezza won't be much better (nor do they handle much better).
You'll pay a crazy amount on insurance for the luxury of having a dump valve and slightly better straight line speed. The Clio offers a much better all round drive than either the Pulsar or the Imprezza though, and has much more rewarding handling.
The Integra Type R is a good shout though - I didn't think of that one. I have never driven one, but I know they offer great value for money.
