Legacy rally car
Discussion
Ok with all the Subaru talk at present it got me thinking (and reading Wikipedia).
But how easy would it be to buy (or semi build) a hot Subaru Legacy turbo for the road?
Not an actual rally car. But instead of pluming for an early Turbo 2000 Impreza as a fast practical affordable road car. I wonder how easy or feasible it would be to build/buy a similarly powered Legacy Gen 1?
I did a quick search of the classifieds and couldn't see any Gen 1 Legacy's for sale, so my hunch is, this wouldn't be so easy.
Any info would be good though. Did Subaru actually sell a "hot" Legacy in the UK or would it be JDM imports only?
So something that looks like this, sounds nice and goes well too:

They sold the single turbo models in the UK on saloon and estate flavours.
I've actually been considering doing something similair myself. I know of a single turbo S2 Legacy for sale, a simple engine swap (say from a classic STI), remap, brakes and handling... all will be sorted then.
My main obstacle would be and this is one thing i can never get right is rust issues. Due to the age of the cars there can be a lot of rust hidden away which would need fixing before any big power project can go ahead.

Piece of cake, most Impreza bits bolt straight on and they have pretty much the same EJ20 motor as the early Imprezas - 220bhp as standard (maybe a bit less in the UK?). My mechanic races a '91 Legacy RS with a 2004 STi drivetrain, said the only part which didn't just bolt up was the driveshaft which wasn't quite the right length.

Should add the standard performance stats for the 1st gen RS as well: 0-60 in 6.5, standing 1/4 in 14.8 - they were pretty quick for the time. I had a '90 Legacy VZ (2.0 NA 4CAM) which made 150bhp and loved screaming its way to the 7750rpm limiter.
They also did lightweight RS-R and RS-RA homologation versions, but those are fairly rare even here in Subaru-land.

Could this rally car be converted for road use?

Don't tease me. Way back in 1995 I converted my Lagacy Turbo into a Grp N road going rally car...it was great. Sold it on to a couple of Welsh lads who wanted to race it in the hills / forests and I believe that is where it died. Moved onto an Audi RS2.....The Legacy was a solid car, great engine but the gearbox was not so reliable. The chassis, exhaust, interior and drivetrain were easily tuneable back in the day.
