I had an Avensis D4-D 2.0, this was years ago in 2002, Euro3 engine, was very reliable. No issues at all. I know some of the BMW engines had / have the timing chain right at the back, so may be a pig if things go wrong. Though I think it was much older stuff from 2009. Generally, no issues with them AFAIK

Whatever the Lexus IS 220d (2.2l) had is probably one to avoid. Reams of people experienced dpf, egr and head gasket issues. The stand out troubled car from a manufacturer usually seen as the most reliable. Bit odd because the Avensis of the same era must have been ok given so many were seen about as mini cabs covering galactic mileages.

It's funny, but the most unreliable engines ever fitted into Toyota's are the BMW sourced 1.6 and 2.0 diesel ones, fitted to Avensis, Verso, Auris and Rav4. Toyota's own D4-D engines are fine.Timing chains snapping is the main issue I understand. It is the N47 engines, which BMW also have issues with.

Alot of SMF conversions pre BMW but other than that most seem to be pretty reliable.
