Impreza Clutch
Discussion
Car is a '98 Impreza Turbo 2000, (5 door, and UK supplied if that makes any difference).
The clutch has started slipping, and will need changing soon.
I have changed several clutches before, but only on old "classic cars" where you remove the engine and / or gear box. Someone I spoke to recently said that he had changed a clutch on an Impreza in 3 hours and that it was not difficult.
My manual (downloaded off the internet years ago) does not cover a clutch change.
So, does anyone know what is involved? I guess if it can be done in half a day, it does not require engine removal. So I presume you can drop the gear box quite easily? If anyone has done the job and can give me some pointers, that would be appreciated.
On a different note, the car also has a "CV type clicking noise" This is much louder when turning right than it is when turning left. I assume that it is one of the outboard joints, but which side?

For the CV joint lift the wheels off the ground, turn the wheel to whichever direction causes the click and spin the wheels by hand. If you take all four wheels off the ground you can have the wheels spinning on tickover and do it that way if you can't replicate the sound by hand spinning.Only thing is that with the wheels fully of the ground the CV joint is stressed in a different way and may not create the click. In any case they are easy to remove for manual inspection.
I am just in the process of uploading a workshop manual (.pdf) that covers 1997-1998 impreza onto my servers. I'll post the link when it's there.

I hope you have broadband, it's a 149Mb zipfile. I'll leave it there for the next couple of days.

The only advice I can give is to get your new clutch from Alyn at AS Performance. He will give you all the info needed to change it and he'll do you a decent price on a clutch kit too. He is one of the good honest guys of the trade.
One other thing is that the flywheel needs to be in good nick, so might need skimming.

Downloaded OK. However, that looks like the same manual I allready have.
The section of the clutch just gives a describtion of it.
What I wanted to know is what is involved in changing it. Is it simply a matter of removing the gear box, or is there more to it than that?
You're absolutely right, i've just had a look through myself and it's missing the 'How to....' sections. That's about as much use as roast pork at a barmitsfa!!The section of the clutch just gives a describtion of it.

Download the 2002 WRX manual. Thats not very different from yours and should give you a good idea of what's what! Had a look at this manual and it's all there!!

I've recently changed the clutch on my Legacy, non turbo but I hope the following will be of use.
Drive shafts are held in place, gearbox end, with a roll pin. When refitting make sure you have the hole lined up right as it is offset so 180degrees out and the roll pin won't fit.
The propshaft will unbolt at the center joint, I left it in at the gearbox end to stop oil pouring out.
I supported the gearbox from above - length of wood across the engine bay and a strap onto where the stabilizer fits. I then just moved the 'box back to give enough room to change the clutch.
Get a spigot bearing as apparently they are prone to breaking up, mine had.
Took me about 6 hour, no help and no ramp or pit.
If I can help anymore give me a shout.
