Mkiv Supra missfire and Heavy Steering
Discussion
Hello chaps,
Ive just been to look at a mkiv supra non turbo. The car itself was fairly clean but it had some problems that i wanted to get an opinion on as to whether they are easy fixes or if the car is to be avoided.
When i got to the guy who was selling the car he said that last night he went to clean the engine bay and jet washed it and since then it has had the misfire, when he took me out in it, it was seriously down on power and had no grunt to it. I know roughly what they should feel like as i sold my one back in october. He says that his mechanic mate reckons its got water in the spark plugs and should be sorted easily? is this true or could he be hiding something more sinister?
The second problem was that the steering is extremely heavy and when the wheel is turned is whines, its not a high pitched whine, more the sound of an electric motor stuggling if that makes sense? when turning the wheel its sort of felt like it was juddering?
I would normally post this on mkivsupra.net but its blocked when i am at work
Any advice would be gratefully received.
thanks
Miles

Sounds like either the power steering pump is fubarred, which isnt expensive to replace. Or it may just be a simple case of it needs more fluid + bleeding, which is very simple. Just stick some fluid in, and turn the wheel from full lock to full lock several times and it should go away, top up again to full level and replace cap, job done

Water in the plug wells is an easy fix with a VAX hoover, very common issue with washed engines. I hoovered an MX5 plugholes today after I cleaned it
About the only common problem on Supra's is the power steering pump, once they are noisy they stay noisy! And the symptoms you report are exactly right.
If little else is wrong its a good bargaining tool if you know the faults
