Toyota Corrola GTi

Hi guys,

I love my toyotas and over 3 years I have owned a Mk2 MR2, Mkiv N/A supra and a Mkiv Twin turbo supra. I am now thinking of getting a corrola Gti as an everyday run around.

The ones I have spotted seem to have quite a bit of millage on them (not always a problem I know) however I was after some pointers on things to look out for or price of parts should things fail.

Also any idea what engine they use is it the 4Age?

Ahh didnt realise there was more than 1 shape Gti lol (shows how much I know)

its the early 90's one qute square looking.

This is the one that has caught my eye

Thought its good enough nick to take to the shops etc (walk to work and use tiv in weekends) but also has potential for a nice project

Ah yes GTi must be the UK badge, I think of the hot version of that shape as an FX-GT (JDM badge) as thats what most of them are down here. (ETA: FX is the hatch version the sedan was just a GT)

If the GTi is the same as the FX-GT then its a 4AGE and AFAIK they drive pretty well - 140bhp/1020kg

The Corolla immediately after that shape (a more rounded one) got the 160bhp 20v 4AGE in GT form, slightly heavier though.

But sadly not in the UK. The best they did was the GXI which had the 1800cc 7a-fe engine. Then they went with the 1600cc 109 bhp 4afe engine in the later "bug eye" model. I've got one of these but dumped the 4afe and swapped it for the supercharged 4A-GZE - that's now pushing out 198bhp which is fun in the Corolla Lots of info/pics on my website ae111sr

The GTi had the 16valve 4age engine which came in two versions TVIS and non-TVIS with the latter producing 129bhp. Excellent car - I had one for nearly 7 years with no problems at all. Biggest problem with them now (apart from the usual wear and tear) will be rust.

Some even came with a 6 speed box and LSD as a factory option...rare though!

I have seen them described as being almost as good as an Integra Type R but for a fraction of the price.

Are we talking about UK Corollas or import Levins here? The levin is definitely a cheaper Integra competitor.

I was talking about the JDM versions of the Corolla hatch/sedan as I don't know about the UK versions.

To clarify:

Corolla FX-GT (AE92), 4AGE 16v 140bhp - shape the OP is looking at (albeit in UK GTi form)



Corolla FX-GT (AE101), 4AGE 20v 160bhp


Both were also made in a small sedan form.

The Levin (aka Treuno) is Corolla based but quite a different car.

The main thing to look out for is rust, it could be everywhere. Engines are getting on a bit too, don't overly trust the Toyota reliability, I had a 4AGE go in my AE86.
