Impreza bad vibrations

my 99 Impreza has vibration when going at 70mph, everything, obviously, pointed to wheels being out of balance but I have had them done twice so am now worrying it is something more sinister...any ideas?!

Have you checked the tyres themselves for pitting or the to see if your alloys are straight?

I have this problem on mine as well and it does get better when the wheels are balanced but its still there.

when they balanced them the second time they checked that it was nothing else obvious, i cannot say that they checked exactly what you have mentioned but they said they could not see anything obvious, assuming it is not the tyres could it be something like a drive shaft?

Try cleaning up the disk surface the wheels mount to, bits of corrosion etc. can cause vibrations as the wheels aren't mounted to a flat surface.

Or swap the wheels front to back and see if the vibration follows the wheels. Good way to find out if its the wheels/tyres or not.

thanks for that, not thought of cleaning that, I think he has already tried the swapping idea, he even rotated the tyre and put it back on the wheel

Check that the brake discs arent warped or any grooves on discs and pads. Seeing far too many newer Subarus coming in with discs needing a skim. Vibration can be felt through the steering when braking.

Have you swopped both fronts with both rears?

There was a production run of a tyre a few years back which was famous for the tyre/road-surface area going out of shape...

I had something similar on my Skyline, it turned out the tyres wheren't totally round. New set on the front cured it.

now that i think about it , it has been vibrating since I put this set of tyres on, I just don't use it that much for M'way work therefore it took me a while to notice

so my faith in Falken's could be severly dented...I take back everything I said about them Mr Curry!

If they've been balanced on one of those machines with the hood-cover, the fitter would never notice. As far as the machine is concerned, they ARE in balance.

A friend had this a few years back. Get them on a machine, and spin them round by hand - the undulations were obvious to the eye at even slow RPM.

His tyres were a year or more old though - if yours are new, try complaining.

I cannot say what they do, i would imagine they use those machines most do, tyres not far off being replaced so i have got good use out of them...the car spends most of it's time of a and b roads so I stray only briefly into speed zone hence why it has taken me about a year to notice!!!
