decat problems on my 97 scooby??

ive had a decat pipe but on today inplace of the middle section cat and it sounds awful? when i put my foot down its got far to much baffle? the cat further up was taken off before i got the car so i dont no what diffrance that one made,
Is this a common thing to happen or is there a fault some where down the line??
