Classic impreza rear brakes binding

The rear brakes have started binding on my 99 impreza classic turbo wagon.

I've had them apart and the caliper sliders are free and I cleaned everything up but it still does it.

How does the handbrake work on this model? There is only one hydraulic pipe in to each caliper on each side so does the handbrake work on the drive train (and therefore I can discount it) or does it act on the rear hydraulic system upstream of the caliper?

Any ideas gratefully received.

The handbrake is cable operated. Take off the rear disks and you'll see the mechanism.

Mine is doing the same at the moment, you can feel the handbrake is not releasing the shoe from the drum sometimes. Its off to get sorted next week at ASP.

I've got mine in bits at the moment and the handbrake mechanism is all working fine and releasing ok. Now I have it all stripped down it looks like my problem is gunk that's built up over time on the caliper piston which isn't letting it retract easily. It all cleans off easily so I'll let you know if that works.

Yes, that was my problem. Extending the piston and cleaning it with wd40 and a scotch pad allowed it to retract properly and the problem is now sorted.
