is there really that much of a difference between the 2?
Oooh yes. Yes indeedy. The most you're ever going to get out of a 3S-GE without spending massive amounts of cash on it is about 180-190bhp. The variable valve tricksy BEAMS lump in a few SS-IIIs produced around 200bhp. And they're hens teeth.
Depends really. How much money do you want to throw at a FWD platform when a good ST205 can be had for not very much cash?
i'm just having a look now mate.i definately want one.is it better to try and get a jap or uk one?also what should i look out for when viewing them?whats their bad points?also i know i'm being a pain but any ideas what mine is worth?it's an m reg silver gt.the whole car is standard.the body work is mint apart from a slight scratch on the front wing.it's done 130,000 miles its just had a new exhaust, cam belt was done at 106,000,loads of toyota history and mot'd till jan 2010,no smoke drives lovely no knocks(just not quick enough)lol.
Imports and UK cars are pretty much exactly the same. UK cars are easier to insure.
WRC models go no faster and are really not worth any premium IMHO.
Only a couple of common faults - the trick front suspension needs replacing every 60K or so (bloody figure of 8 joints) and the rear diff mounts fail (hard throttle in 3rd or 4th, lift and listen for a thud from the back end). The diff mount is about 100 quid to fix. The suspension is rather more expensive, budget 500 quid plus.
Clutches will cost serious money to replace if it needs doing.
It's a 30K plus high performance car. It has an thirst for fuel, consumables and service bills to match.
Go in with eyes wide open, get a bad example and she'll empty your account in a heartbeat.
Get a good one, and it's pretty much bomb proof cross country fun. A friend has 160K of very hard miles on his 1994 car and she's still running fine.
