MR2 SW20 gearbox question

Hi,

Friend of mine has an MR2. It's one of the early ones with the 118(ish) bhp engine.

The Gearbox and nakered and needs replacing.

Will a 156 bhp MR2 gearbox fit?????

If not. Are there any other toyota models out there that have the same gearbox???

I can't see any reason why not been a 3S engine, possibly difference in ratios/clutch etc, but happy to stand corrected on any of this.

The 3S-FE was fitted to Carina E's I believe, so that might be a source of gearbox, though finding one that hasn't been a taxi with 3 million miles on could be hard.

Have you thought about just swapping the whole lot out for the 3S-GE engine and gearbox? If you're going to all that trouble you'll probably find you can pick up a good 2nd hand engine with gearbox and all other ancilliaries for peanuts. A lot of these are from people who have swapped out 3S-GE's for the 3S-GTE.
