MR2 MkI spoiler - can I take it off?
Discussion
Hi, I'm planning on getting a mk1 mr2 as i've decided it's about time I had a fun road&track toy on the cheap!
my question is; can I remove the rear spoiler? i think it looks much better with out it, as shown in the pic. it somehow transforms the proportion, but obviously i don't want to make it unstable at high speed
it seems they were not sold without the spoilers (ie they were standard fit), i just wonder if they're functional?

Anyone have experience of this? any help/advice much appreciated.

They were only sold without the spoiler on a low power version that we didn't get in this country. Yes, the both the perspex spoiler and the one on the boot and the front splitter actually do stuff if you are planning to go faster than about 80 on the straight. Apparently the steering get very light without these.
There is a mod that makes the spoiler look better by moving it slightly further back that you can find on the owner's club forums.

I've had mine off for months, haven't had a problem with 'brisk' B-road driving, nor with high speeds. Leaves a couple of bolt holes in the middle of the boot that should be plugged, then three bolt holes each side which are outside the boot seal and don't cause a leak. I'm doubtful of any real aerodynamic effect, considering the MR2's stepped rear.
