Skyline to Evo

Hi all

Due to the economy problem i seriously need to free up some cash so im having to look into the possability of selling my R34 gtt.

I need a car for commuting and I dont really want to leave the jap scene so the most appealing option at the momment seems to be selling the skyline and picking up a cheaper evo4/5 whilst freeing up a few grand.

Obviously they are both good cars however there are a few differences between the two so just wondering if anyone has done the switch and what thier opinions are / were?

I havent driven an R34, but I have driven an Evo 4 - i would expect it to feel much less suited to cruising than the Skyline. Its not particularly refined on the motorway, its short geared, and the interior is pretty cheapo. Lots of wind noise, too.

On the plus side, a nicely modded one goes like the clappers, especially down twisty roads.

My only downer on the Evo 4 & 5s is that they feel very...ordinary unless you are caning it. Inside its just a mitsubishi lancer from the early 90s, it only really shows its true colours when you throw it into a corner faster than you can with nearly anything else.

Many moons ago my daily car was a 1.3 Colt (previous version). I had a run in an Evo6 and noticed that half the dash was identical to my Colt. Great car but not what you'd call refined if that's important to you.

hi mate, saw you mention on the skyline forum and saw you were thinking of getting rid, im havign the same thoughts but my car owes me ALOT! I would go for a dc5 integra or an ep3 civic type R, still nippy and uber reliable and cheaper to run

if you are coming from a skyline and want something a bit cheaper go for a 200sx/silvia, still comfortable but quite quick too and not so ikea inside.

Thanks all, feedback much appreciated. Really dont want to let the skyline go as i love it but tough times... Will have a bit more of a look at a few of the recommendations when i know a bit more.

Wadeski - Cheers. The skyline is top drawer on the motorway easing past everything however i always thought the acceleration on a evo would be a bit more brutul? As for the interior the skyline sounds and looks aboout the same. Liking the sound of goes like the clappers, not so keen on the ordinary bit.

Cardiff - Suprised to hear you considering selling yours. Youve done a hell of a lot and your cars a true beaut! In fact i kind of wanted to make take my R34 in the same direction you took with yours on the gtr looks. Will be a shame if you ever have to let her go although you should get big money compared to most.

I've just sold my Skyline and am thinking of going for a Civic Type r with a supercharger conversion, i reckon my Skyline lost me around £20k but the appeal of something newer and not so focussed has converted me i think

Not many people choose an Evo for economy. What about a Scooby? More economical for your commute.

Its not for economy really, anything fun will eat petrol but the costs arent too bad, its more just looking like il need a chunk of cash freed up.

to be fair mate i would sell it.
i have a really lovely r34 gtt and i had to sell it about 8 months ago due to the amount of miles i started doing!
i went and bout a cheap rover 220 tomcat to start with and put 7k in my pocket!
the rover was so much fun and ok no where near the skyline pace but it actually was more fun in the twisties and its so raw!
had enough of 140bhp and bought a fait coupe 20vt and put a stage one setup on it and i tell you what it is much quicker than my r34 ever was! its got a really nice well disigned interior althought the seats are a bit rubbish in keeping you in place the reast feels and looks great. the fait has more body roll and stuff than the skyline but then the skyline ahd coilovers and the fait is standard at the moment but the grip in the fiat is something else compared to both skylines i have owned in the past.
i have had to do some bits to the fiat but then its a older car and my skylines needed work to so its just the fact of having a older car but the parts are much cheaper. front and rear discs cost me £120! the smae discs for my r34 where £400 and they are the smae size and same discs!
best bit is that i get 30mpg without a problem and about 34 mpg on a run i have 260bhp which would easy see off my stage 1 r34 gtt and its comfy and cost me 2k to buy now they are even cheaper than that.
don't get me wrong i loved my skylines and i still moderate skylineowners.com but for value for money they don't make sense for me anymore.

Evo 4 engine suffers crank wall, whilst Evo 5 engine on doesn't - worth bearing in mind.

Right, here we go! Evo IV, harsh ride ( even the GSR ), cheap interior, bloody fantastic to throw around A/B roads, i know cos i've got one! BUT if i'd been able to go for the V i would have. Crankwalk is an issue on the IV but not that common, more a horror story told by later model owners. The V is a better car without the crank issue and really easy to improve performance if you want to go that way Check out the MLR, Evo owners club, you can do model comparisons, speak to all the owners, read the reports of issues relating to the different variants etc, etc We've loads of ex-skyline owners, seems a popular move.
