friend of mine is thinking about getting a Mazda MX6. only about a £1000.
has anyone got any experience of them, what to look out for, engine troubles? etc. the model he is thinking of is a 2.5 V6.

also considering a mid 90's celica(2.0).

The KL V6 is a good solid engine AFAIK. Not the most involving cars (same as a Ford Probe under the skin) but shouldn't be any major reliability concerns. Similar story with the Celica really, competent but unexceptional FWD chassis.

The MX6 is a good all rounder really, ticks most of the boxes.

Uk spec is a 2.5 v6 KLDE with 164bhp - 0-60 around 7 and 140+ mph
J-spec imports are a 2.0 KF-ZE with 163bhp and similar performance or the sought after 2.5 KL-ZE with 200bhp - 0-60 in under 7.

The imports are the ones to get. Most will have 4 wheel steer, digital climate control, spoiler brake light, stainless sill plates etc that the UK cars dont have BUT are also limited to 112mph (which can be removed)

The UK spec cars benefit from leather in most later models (96/97), 16" wheels, air-con and projector headlamps.

Prices are rock bottom at the moment. I bought a 1996 P plate with FSH, leather, aircon, 1 owner, metallic paint, electric everything, MOT/Tax for £440 in March.
A grand should get you a 1996/1997 car with low mileage and a very good history, plenty of mot etc and no issues.

Things to look for:
The 2.0 isnt great as it lacks torque compared to bigger brothers
The engines are good for 250k+ if serviced every 6k
Engine is non-interferance so even if the cambelt goes it doesnt need a rebuild. Cambelt intervals are 60k
HLA's (tappets) can get noisy but a couple of pro treatments usually sorts this.
Early models suffer from rusty arches and sunroofs more than later models.
The engine is very limited in terms of adding mods and gaining bhp. Even heavily modded n/a KLZE's struggle to make 240bhp. You can boost/nos/supercharge without too many problems tho.

The Ford Probe was based on the mx6 so the running gear, brakes, suspension, exhaust and engine are the same. This means general repairs etc are fairly cheap.

They are a rare car, a good GT car with 4 seats and a useable boot, plenty of go and most owners love them.

Hope this helps.
