RX 8 Engine problems

I have just bought a good condition, 04 low milage 37000 230 RX 8 and now I'm hearing they are pron to needing engine re builds can any one offer me some advice or reasurance? What milage does this occur at? symptoms to look out for? Preventative measures? Your help please.

Make sure the oil is topped up and keep to the Mazda servicing schedule.

When you go for a drive make sure the engine gets up to full temp before switching it off. Apparently that can cause engine damage.

NB* its just something I remember reading on here, so I'm sure someone will be along to correct/confirm what I said.

As long as you keep it topped up with oil, service it as required you'll be fine, rebuilds are very rare and are often through misuse/lack of care, nothing to do with mileage. Flooding can occur if you switch off before engine is warm e.g moving off of drive and stopping.

You shouldn't have too many problems. Get your car to a Mazda dealer and see if all the update's are done: Oil cooler pipes, starter motor, ecu updates.

The warming up the engine before switching off is to stop flooding which can kill the cat. Ecu update and starter motor helps with that.

Make sure you take it to the rev limit fairly regularly to keep the 3rd port free.

Some people have had problems. Just give it decent oil and a regular service.

Yep, I need a new CAT, 3 of 4 coils off the pack went, sends fuel down the exhaust and nacks the CAT, drives still and passed MOT just down on power at the moment till I get it sorted.

Uprated starter helps with the possible flooding issues, it was not a recall though.

An engine rebuild is only need after 150,000 miles on the renisis engine .

coil pack failures are becoming common on older cars. Some were recalled for odds and ends to do with suspension ( you can check if yours was affected on www.theaa.com). Other than that if you make sure you keep the oil level up and service it as per schedule it should not need a rebuild.
