Scooby Rear Shocks

Car is a UK MY98 Turbo 2000 5 door.
Just passed the MOT, but advice on rear shocks (dampers). Allegedly they have an oil mist, and dont bounce quite as well as they should.
As they are 11 years and 110k miles old, its probably time to change them at the next service.
Do you have to remove the coil spring, and if so, do you need a spring compressor?
Where is the best place to buy replacements? I am not planning on modyifying the car, but if it was cheaper to buy something better than Subarus finest then I would probably consider it.

You could probably pick up some cheap second hand replacements complete without having to remove the springs..
Although with most things second hand it's a risk? New items from KYB would probably be your cheapest and best bet... These are quite reasonable for the money and probably a better option than going for a cheap coilover.
Sadly the companies I deal with only do either springs or coilovers for this model. Eibach being the cheapest at around £1K.
