MK1 MR2 - Revival

Seeing as Caterham have the rights to reproduce the original Lotus Super 7 now known as the Caterham 7... I was only thinking, it would be really good if a similar instance happened with the MK1 MR2.

I think a few modifications would be in order, like fully galvanised chassis and body panels, use aluminium for the bonnet, engine bay cover etc to reduce weight and use the 1.8 VVTi lump for some extra power and have options for Coupe, T-Bar and Spider Style Convertible.

I know I'd buy one

Love that to happen.. but rather they but in the 3S-GTE rather than the VVti engine in all fairness.. suppose the VVTLi engine would be ok

Yes..but then you have the Health & Safety police these days, emissions, taxation yadda yadda and "Ohhh you can't do that, it maybe dangerous" squad spoiling every ones enjoyment, hence the VVTi suggesstion

If a low volume manufacturer bought the rights, surely the same H&S rules wouldnt apply?

I can't imagine a lo-cater-field has to stand up to the same stringent safety tests as a mass produced car?

Bok Motorsport were considering looking into how much it would cost to get ahold of the toolings from Toyota but they completely went off the radar around the time the recession kicked in. This was annoying as I really wanted a starter motor from them at the time...

ETA I did see someone who had modified a westfield frame to take a mid engine 4A-GE from Mister Two in a magazine. It could be a good kit if mass produced for those of us with good engines in rusty chassis.

It costs less than £30 to get a starter refurbished at your local altenaor place

i've got to say, this would be brilliant. Imagine if somewhere in the developing world (like South Africa) was knocking out MR2s with a modern, emissions-friendly engines....even as kits?
