So I have an 11 plate 118d with about 115,000 miles on the clock. I’m currently a university student and commute about 350 miles a week. The car has been great so far and I haven’t had any problems. Will it last the duration of my university studies (3 years) or shall I throw in the towel now whilst I can still get a bit of money for it?

It’s got full service history and 3 owners including me.

Personally, I'd get shot of it.

With that mileage its the perfect car for the job.

Keep on top of the servicing and have the timing chain check done and unless you get very unlucky i see no material issues

Can’t vouch for the engine/gearbox but the rest of it should last OK. My ‘07 130i is on 166k miles, still going strong and everything works OK.

I'd hang on to it - as you've said, it's been reliable. Buying something else - unless you buy new - you could end up with something worse.

Why would you get rid? Makes no sense.

Never had a car with such a high mileage before!

Thanks for all of the replies.

Don't worry. It won't suddenly implode. So long as you service it, you'll be fine.

I thought diesel 4 pot engines were troublesome? Weren't they French or something.

The BMW diesel engine's French? No idea to be honest.

Regular oil changes will help prolong the life of the engine, every 10k max using decent BMW spec oil (Fuchs, Mobil 1, Castrol etc)

Timing chains can be problomoatic, you could get it replaced aswell as the tensioners and guides (only use OEM parts though, i've seen aftermarket kits fail) as preventive maintenance.

Keep on top of the maintenance and there's no real reason to sell it unless/until it dies and then it's time to get a new one!

That's just run in.

Keep your costs down by doing your own oil changes and do them at 10k miles as others have said, and keep on top of electronic niggles & it will see you right through.

I understand your dilemma, wanting to sell whilst the value is higher, however you replace it with a lower mileage car - and then putting mileage on it may then become a concern.

My 125i has just clicked over 133.5k, still feels tight as a drum and as if it will do another 133k without too many issues. As recommended, ensure you change the oil every 10k or so (if you don't want to do it yourself National Tyres used to be very reasonable, not much more than buying the oil and filter yourself), but the rest of the car should be fine.

Pretty sure the 11 Plate Diesels were improved from a reliability POV anyway.

As other have said before, if you look after it, it will be fine.

Took our 57 plate 120d to 190,000 miles. We had the timing chain recall done at 150k but things didn't really start to go wrong until around the 160K mark when we had to replace the turbo and then at 175k, we the had the common fault with the ABS sensors on the rear axle requiring the drive shafts to be replaced But apart from that it ran really well,

Couldn't get it to 200k as the DPF was deemed to be near the end of it's life and with a couple of other issues, decided to chop it in for an current F20 116d.

I found myself in a similar situation with my 2008 120i a few years ago. It's now on 213k and fine. Just need to keep servicing it mate
