A friend has a very nice E38 740iL V8, it is a 1997 P reg car.

He is retired from the motor trade: he ran his own dealership and can work on the car himself in his very well equipped home garage.

He asked me if I knew the answer to the question: so here it is

What rear springs/shocks can he fit to replace the worn out hydraulic self levelling suspension...?

He doesn't want the ride to be over hard, just to replicate the cars OEM feel.

If anyone knows what would fit/ parts numbers that would be great.

He tried his local BMW dealership.... but got absolutely nowhere...!

Have a look on here; on the rear axle diagram and then into the breakdowns in there: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/partgrp?id=GJ82-E...

Use those part numbers to find the relevant shocks, springs, top/bottom spring perches, top mounts etc - source via eBay UK and Autodoc

Just fit E39 M5 rear springs + Bilstein B4 shocks. Use non-SLS E38 top mounts. Unplug pump. Done. Rides like stock. Dealers won't help with this.
