I'm looking for a used 330e (2020-2022).

Most of them seem to have been fleet owned and have done big miles each year. This means that most of them have only been serviced every 20 to 22,000 miles.

As someone with lots of mechanical sympathy, this scares me.

Should I be concerned about this? Anyone with experience of these?

I saw one yesterday with 78,000 miles that ticked all the boxes apart from the long service intervals and a ticking/rattling at cold idle. (Chain? Wastegate?)

Any help appreciated as I think these cars are a great package but I don't want to get burned

Interesting dilemma, I was half considering 530e similar to your used fleet purchase, thoughts

Battery is an unknown, some seem to last others have very limited range. Did see somewhere a hybrid battery is cycled so many times Vs an EV battery their lifespan is limited.

Modern BMW engines are so good, as it's been fully warm eating easy motorway miles in a long 8th gear and modern oils etc I suspect it will be fine for 150k plus. I'm currently 520d and at 150k the engine is only half way thru it's life

Others will say run for the hills

As it is I'm skipping hybrid and going full EV as they're so cheap used. Liked a comment on other thread that a hybrid is a gateway drug to a full EV

Good luck, last thought is you can map the petrol to 300 bhp so with hybrid on top it could be mega quick!!!

Thanks for the advice!

Yeah the company selling it say the battery is at 95% health according to their "check".

Yeah there's very little in the way of negative comments in terms of reliablity for 330e to be honest so maybe I just take the plunge on one with the thought that they are designed for this use!

Yes be very concerned. 20k miles between oil changes kills engines slowly.
That ticking at cold idle on the one you saw is a red flag. Walk away.
Fleet owned + long intervals = worn timing chain guides, carbon buildup, and possible turbo wear.

If you really want a 330e, find a privately owned one with max 12k mile oil changes. They exist but rare. Otherwise look at a different car.

I’m interested in a G21. The cars generally within my budget are 330e’s, there’s some diesels as well. My concern is timing chain on either variants with the cost of replacement being high.

My current car is an Alfa Giulia 2.2 diesel, which I bought at 100,000 miles and it’s now on 161,000, it came with good history and has been very reliable. The Alfa is also belt driven which costs around £600 to replace, which I can live with.

I’m very concerned about ending up with a huge bill on the BMW.

Alfa don’t do a wagon anymore, I’m not over keen on an SUV and like the Alfa the BMW is RWD with XF8, which I love.

I had one of these fleet 330e.
They run a condition based service schedule. Mine flagged at 18k. Serviced every 9 months.

I don’t think you will get one that will be serviced more than the bmw schedule as I doubt any were sold to private enthusiasts who are diligent in servicing. They were a bik tool and nothing else and the lease company certainly wouldn’t pay for extra services.

Yeah it's a tough one on these. Such great packages just a shame a lot have been treated this way.

The condition based servicing is all well and good, but is there a way of knowing if they've been serviced when the car wants, or they've left it with yhe service light on for 6,000 miles?!

I will hold out for one with a better service history!

The idrive will show the service being late. If it’s yellow it’s been done slightly late but if it’s red it was done very late.

The service log will be in the idrive. Green is good yellow is overdue but ok.

Bmw can also check the history using the key.

You want a better service history than a full BMW service history? You'll be waiting a long time especially if you want a car that was almost entirely purchased new by fleets - private buyers generally went for a 330i or a 320i.

Well, I'd be happy if it's been serviced according to it's condition based monitoring (even if it's every 20k miles). But not if it's missed it's schedule.

Will see what I can find and in waiting for the dealer to contact regarding the issues this one had.

Re the hybrid battery, would getting the seller to charge it to full then seeing what range it displays give you an indication of the health? Genuine question! I suppose using an OBD or other way of accessing the battery health info might be a smarter idea. Maybe it tells you like in the I3 (I think)?

Re cycling - don't hybrids get more cycles BUT they're partial cycles so not as bad? The battery might feel more restrictive because older hybrids generally have a shorter range so you'll really notice it when it's down to 80% life vs an EV that had 300 miles and now has 240 miles. Again, more questions than statements as I'm still trying to figure things out.

Dunno about hybrid being the gateway drug. For my use, hybrid seems the best option. 2 hours for a 29 mile charge for a city drive, 5 minutes for a 400 mile charge (petrol!) for a country drive. No need to remember to plug in overnight.

Good to know! The dealer selling it are currently reducing it every day and I'm tempted!

Oct 2025 I bought an ex fleet 2023 high mileage (78k miles) G21 330e Touring with Sport Plus Pack......

Purchased from BMW main dealer with approved used warranty. The service history is all on the IDrive and if a service is late it'll be stated on the display. As my car was bang on 3 years old when i purchased it, it was all main dealer and serviced by BMW.

Now on 81k.

I don't think car has been charged many times, as mentioned above... these are a BIK dodge with company fuel card. Why add to your own electricity bil when you can just fill up at company expense?

As a high miler I paid around 9K - 10K less than a 2023 example with 20k miles.

As for reliability, I don't know how the 330e will compare with any other ICE I've owned and this is my fist hybrid....... it's a second car and runs around mainly on electric, and so far all is ok.

Electric range is around 29 miles in this hot weather and 18 - 20 in winter.

That’s half its electric range isn’t it?

No... it's about right for 2023 with the new dash etc. 32 range miles today. More than I need for local driving.

These 330e are just disappointing in cols weather. Range can be 16 - 20

Yep, just checked again and not really sure where I saw it would do 60 miles, must have been the heat!

Interesting. I ran a Golf GTE a few years ago, and that asked for an oil change every 10k. When I questioned it with the tech, he told me that it's because they can be in situations where they go from a cold start (as in running on EV) to full motorway speed in a matter of seconds. They could also not get the engine up to temp because most of the journey has been done on EV but the battery ran out half a mile from the destination, or various other similar scenarios.

That made a lot of sense to me, so I'm not sure I would be comfortable with 20k+ intervals despite what BMW say.

Funny you mention that. I have an older Golf GTE and not having a warm engine is annoying. You have to plan when you are going to accelerate hard in a way. So I might pop the system into "Charge battery" mode just to keep the engine running. I have no idea how the previous owners treated the car. In the central data screen between the dials (no idea what else to call it), I'd like to have the speed in big numbers because 20 zone but instead I have the oil temp there. There's no way I can tell how previous owners have treated the car but the engine feels and sounds fine (as much as a weak 1.4 engine can). Certainly, there's a lot more thinking involved both in terms of managing range (if you want to save money and use the EV bit) and warming the engine up. OTOH for general commuting, if you're not too bothered about using the EV bit, just pop it into hybrid and let the system manage things. I guess the 330e is going to be the same.
