X3 not yet 3 yrs old (30k miles), only ever hand washed by me using decent products, both rear wheels with the dreaded spider leg corrosion rapidly spreading out from the centre caps. At last service I asked whether could be put forward as a warranty issue and was told ‘no one available today to assess, you’ll need to book it in specifically…’ Yesterday, tried to do just that to be told this time ‘no point as it’s wear and tear so won’t be adjudged a manufacturring defect and won’t be covered…’ (without seeing the car or images etc). Escalated to BMW UK who also seemed uninclined to want to intervene but grudgingly opened a complaint.

Anyone been down this road?

Its a bit of a lottery. If it's from the centre out it's generally due to the centre cap rubbing and opening up the lacquer.

However if you have kerb damage elsewhere on the wheel, they tend not to be too interested in helping even if it's not associated with what you described.

A friendly local dealer that you use regularly for servicing can usually push your case hard otherwise it's all very transactional and computer says no stuff.

When my Dad had his previous X3M he went through 3 sets of wheels in 3 years under warranty because of the milking and lacquer failure…

His current X3 he has fully powder coated wheels. Zero issues

Diamond cut finish needs to die it’s death IMO

Have these wheels previously had tyres changed?

It's usually where the tyre fitter clatters the wheel onto the balancing machine and damages the lacquer.

Yes, the rears have been changed and I suppose it’s possible that’s the cause. The tyre guys were careful as far as I could see and it’s not unreasonable to have to change tyres.

Anyways, thanks for the responses; we’ll see what BMW make of it.

Diamond cut finish will do this.
Only fix is to use a finish that’s appropriate for a wheel.
Get them powder coated.

Just to update this; following my complaining to BMW UK, I (eventually) was contacted by a different person from the same dealer who, after hearing the tale, asked me to bring the car in for inspection by their body shop manager. Did that yesterday, and with no quibbling at all, they agreed the two affected alloys should be changed under warranty. I also received what seemed to be a completely genuine apology for the initially dismissive responses to my first approach, which was fully accepted as being inappropriate. Fair play for that, it was handled well.

Car goes in on Thursday so, I guess, all's well but a shame the issue had to be pushed to secure a resolution.

It’ll only happen again… Not being negative, just factual

I fully expect it likely will. But, the fronts are still fine so fingers crossed.

It's the road salt.

The DC wheels on my Dacia are perfect after 5 years because I take them off for winter. I doubt Dacia spec a tougher DC finish than other brands.

My iX3 wheels were terrible.

Its just the lip thats DC. They had some white worming when I bought the car, but after about a year water and car cleaning chemicals got underneath the edge and it got to the point you could flake of big chunks of lacquer like Goldmembers skin.

I just got them dipped and powdercoated all black.
