G01 x30d MHT interim - Is diesel madness in 2026?
Discussion
My infinite loop of next car procrastination continues. It goes:
Straight 6 B57 or B58 or Kia EV6 GT-Line S AWD. My favoured beemer is G01 with G21 following suit. My wife would prefer either G01 or Kia. You can get a nice G01 for £22k, whilst the AWD Kia's are about £26k. Typically I keep cars for many years (E91 330d now 10yrs and up to 185k miles). I can charge at home but don't have a 7kw charger installed (add £1k to EV cost?).
One side of my brain say just go and buy what you want. Peak G01 IMHO is the 2020/21 interim incarnation - 30dMHT B57, revised digital dash and iDrive but still physical buttons. Like this one in fact: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202609256...
The other side of my brain says diesel is on borrowed time, the DPF and AdBlue will rear their heads and the 48V MHT battery will conk out. It will cost you thousands, like the E91 has as it has aged and then be unsellable.
One of the two remaining brain cells says the G01 x40i is a good middle ground. Dodging diesel ancillaries and possible future legislation. But is the B57 better suited as the daily engine and if you're going B58 then surely 3 series is the way to go.
My final brain cell says the Kia looks great, has a warranty, does 0-60 in 5secs and does 98% of our needs without public charging. But needs another 4k to buy and then £1k wallbox. Extra £5k buys a lot of fuel...
I don't like leasing and atm no other cars are on the radar. Model Y Juniper is out of price range else Id probably be in that.
Who's owned/driven both the 30d/30dMHT or 40i and has a view. Exta marks for anyone who has also owned/driven the EV6. My brain has gone

I've just been through a very similar decision process. I'm a serial X3 owner with 4 through the household, 2.0 to 3.0 twin turbo diesels.
In casting my net around and playing the auto trader random game I started looking at well spec'ed 2.0 cars.
I've ended up with an X2 35i - 306hp 0-62 in 5 secs, 4wd and generally a good drive. I came to the conclusion that the X3 was just a bit bigger than what I need.
Having said all that - I had made the decision that had I bought an X3 it would've been the 40i as I'm of the same opinion regarding AdBlue and all the other stuff.

have you considered the G08 iX3?
Almost as quick as the 30d, cheaper to run and better equipped in M Sport Pro form?
It's a good idea thank you but I don't really want an iX3. They don't appeal like the ICE ones. My gut saysAlmost as quick as the 30d, cheaper to run and better equipped in M Sport Pro form?
If diesel/petrol: buy a really bloody good diesel/petrol.
If electric: buy a really bloody good EV.
I just bought a new X5 30d. The drivetrain is sublime. 700 miles on tank, 40mpg+, super quiet, torquey, quiet. Suits a large car very well. Diesel is very expensive at the moment, but ppm isn't too bad due to good mpg. If you like diesel go for it. if I was in your position an X3 30d is a no brainer.
I've had both the 30d and 30d MHT in a 7 series and the 40d as well, the MHT 30d is very good and very economical especially around town from cold (when you'd think it wouldn't be) I averaged over 40mpg and that was mainly local driving, it'll give high 50s on a run, the 48V system works wonders with its additional 12hp seemingly punching well above its weight making the engine feel totally effortless and responsive, range was 700-1000 miles depending on how you drove it (but it had a 78lr fuel tank)
It's a car and powertrain I really miss.

Thank you. That is a very tempting review. Not helping my head/heart battle. It's a car and powertrain I really miss.
"Fuelling" an EV6 via home charging on an EV friendly tariff compared to a 30dMHT suggests an approx £1500 a year over 10,000 miles saving. So the wall box pays for itself in year 1. But then an EV6 costs about £4k more to buy.
I have a right dilemma going on. What would I do if I was a billionaire. I'd buy the G01 30dMHT I think. Mmmm..
I have the 30d MHT in a G31 here in Germany.
Zero complaints for me. Sure the 40d is faster, but I've always found the 30d quite enough - even here where you can really use them. You can tell where the money was spent sat at 220km/h for sustained periods - it's quite relaxed.
Reguarly see 1000km to a tank, mixed driving city and autobahn, or around 6/100km consumption in Euro speak.
As said the entire drivetrain is hard to fault, smooth when you want it, torque all over the place but snappier and wakes up when you need it.

I'm hanging onto my G21 330d for dear life. I think the psychological factor of £2 per litre is worse than the actual hit to the wallet. It's a very efficient car and will do 55mpg on my regular 300 mile office round-trip. We ve got a 71 plate model, i bloody love the thing and we toyed with changing it for a new shape M50i, but it does a bloody good job and if i kick its arse which i do more than MRS400 its just a wave of torque.
The reason for not having a the M50 was simple ours owes us nothing at the minute to change up its going to be a 30 grand jump and the only upside is about 25 pence a litre less in fuel, which the savings wouldnt cover the finance.
not very man maths i know.
73 mph on cruise sits lovely at 1500rpm.

I became a BMW fan boy so a slightly biased angle, and for me has to be a straight six petrol.
I also went from an E91 (N55 335i) and moved on to a 2019 G01 X3 M40i. I’d really recommend, objecively I think the best car I’ve had… B58 is bullet proof, it was fun to drive, esp considering its an SUV, it made a great noise, was practical, was reasonably economical for what it was, ride was on firm side but perfectly acceptable. Would really have been sensible to keep it, only moved it on as was offered a good deal to move it on for my ideal spec X3M.
Agree with you that I think peak G01 was 2020/21 pre-LCI with iDrive 7 (which for me was/is the best iDrive) and the updated digital dash, while retaining the physical knobs & buttons. It also avoided the decontenting that affected early LCI cars that resulted from the post covid chip shortage. The pre-LCi misses the 48v mild hybrid & the issues that may come with that (…see the separate & current discussion thread about that under BMW general chat). Subjective but I also personally think pre-LCI looks better, with a more restrained kidney grille & without the ‘halo sword’ rear lights which look a bit fussy to me.
Looks like you’d need £24k/£25k for a 2020/21 G01 M40i.
