Hi all,
Thinking of buying a 2018 BMW 435d with 85k, other than service history, is there anything I should be looking out for? Test drive felt good, no rattles, weird noises. Pulled like a train. I was advised to listen out for noises at 1k rpm, didn't notice anything untoward.
There were a few stone chips (very small on the windscreen but the front of the car and the splitter were pretty immaculate for the miles. Rest of the body is spot on, interior all looked good, the only slight tarnish being the seat lever (to get in the back) looked sun damaged, but didn't bother me. Bit of a squeak rear right as I got out of the car.
I've been Audi for the last 6 years so just looking for advice from the expert PH crew as it will be my first BMW.
Thanks in advance.

No real advice, but I'd be interested in your comments re: the car. I am looking to get a new semi-sensible convertible (it needs to be able to take us and 2 young children when needed). Currently looking at E-class, 6 series and 4 series. The 4 series appeals because it's smaller then the other two (but still has plenty of room in the back), and has the tin top roof so it feels like the least compromised. I have sat in one but never driven one so any insights would be appreciated.
What was the 35d engine like? How noisy was it, and do you think it would work in a convertible or do you really need the '40i petrol engine instead?

I loved it to be honest. I was worried that the interior quality wasn't going to be as good as my previous Audi's. It didn't feel as dated as some might have you believe either. There is a fake engine noise pumped in which I actually quite liked, but as someone who tends to have music on quite loud it's kind of irrelevant. It certainly sounds like a diesel when you step out though (I will add the best sounding diesel I've listened to) not sure how it would be with no roof though.
I would love to try a 440i but they are all miles away in my price range. I have no doubt it would sound nicer but in terms of performance I think the 435 is plenty enough.

The issue with diesels is the noise on partial throttle, most of the 6 pots are fine under load as you can't hear anything diesel like, but a petrol 6 would be far better suited to a convertible, oddly though when the roof is down you get so much ambient nose that most it is drowned out but given the choice a petrol 6 is much better suited, I found the N57 in my 335d a bit gruff on partial throttle same as my current 350d e class cab, should have bought a 400 petrol instead and I think the 40i BMW would be a better choice as well over the 35d.What was the 35d engine like? Oil changes critical if you want to avoid bottom end issues.
On the idrive it's only had services as per BMW schedule. I know everyone says about every year or 10k (or less), based on that would you not recommend it? Pica-Pica said:
Should be fine. My 335d has only had the BMW scheduled services. It’s at 62k miles. No issues. Check that it has had the EGR recall work done. I would agree with having the ZF8 serviced/oil change at about your mileage. Of course, check wheeels and rims for scuffs and tyres for tread depth and uniformity.
Thanks, yeah all the above are decent. Wheels have been refurbed properly, not just painted black. I think the EGR issue doesn't affect 2017 onwards? (correct me if I'm wrong) but the MOT check shows no outstanding recalls.Unless it has lots pf paperwork / invoices to show care & maintenance, and proof of oil & filter changes (regular) etc - keep walking (ignore the iDrive IMO)
Look for oil leaks around the top of the engine; the rocker gasket etc like to fail with age and then leak oil; same with turbos and feeds etc
And as already said; the box will be due a service; expect to pay c£400 for this

Probably could do with a gearbox flush and fresh fluid if it hasn't had one, BMW say these are sealed for life but...
Thanks, I was thinking this as a precautionary job anyway, if nothing else major is on the cards. If anything like Audi, presume the healthy side of £500?
The only other thing maintenance wise that my 335d had around that mileage was front suspension bushes ( I have been known to drive like a **** so wore them out), you get a slight judder through the brakes that feels like warped discs, not biggie though. When I went to have the alignment done afterwards I found the rear cam bolts had rusted beyond use, again cheap stuff, parts online from Sytner online are priced well I found, my local mechanic had them all sorted pretty quickly so no need for dealers or specialists.
My car is now on 105k with nothing other than dealer servicing, absolutely lovely Q car with no badges
