BMW i8 service prices

Hi, I was looking to gather some feedback from those of you with, or have had, an i8.

We've had it nine months and it's now due a service at (almost) eight years old and 41,000 miles.

The items my local BMW dealer in Glasgow have said need doing are engine oil, brake fluid, air filter and spark plugs. They've quoted £590 inc VAT.

Does this sound about right? Thanks!

That sounds about right for a main dealer even if its only 3 spark plugs.

I've seen a couple of folk on here saying their BMW dealer has loaded on additional fees for checks. I'll report back post-service if I get the same.

Are you really keen to keep FBMWSH even now it's getting on a bit?

B for BMW in Clydebank did a full service on my M5 for a chunk less than that, and that's 8 plugs, 2 diffs and transfer case on top.
Extended warranty will still be valid.

I'm biased though as had a few bad experiences with Glasgow BMW.

Sounds about right. Expect a video suggesting the replacement of tyres, an additional charge for disposal of fluids and a top of your screen wash..... thats what usually happens to me

Thanks, I've used B for BMW and A for Audi in the past and they've been ok. They gave me a price for the i8 and it is only marginally cheaper than the one from BMW. They also don't have the ability to fit new TPMS sensors so I'd need to go elsewhere for that.

Contacted a few other BMW specialists and they're in no rush to answer the phone or reply to emails seemingly.

The BMW app provides a little detail if you scroll down to servicing. Brake fluid change £63.06

As mentioned, there will be some sort of vehicle check charge. Also, they may have included door struts too, about £170 if I recall. Worth asking for full breakdown.

As an aside, how do you find your i8 ?

I had a test drive in a 2018 Roadster a couple of weeks ago, but am leaning towards a coupe. We were away for the weekend in my partners Mini and had to park overnight in a multi storey car park close to the hotel, I was a bit uncertain if we'd have been able to get out of the car if we were in an i8 due to the doors ! - have you had any problem with this ?

Also, my understanding is that they can be used without charging ? - I live in an apartment and have no charging facility at home.

I appreciate that the later cars have improved batteries, do you feel it would be detrimental to buy an older car - 2014 / 15 - with FSH , rather than a later car ?

Any comments appreciated

really loving mine (pre-lci coupe).

you can 100% use without a charger - economy will not be as good as if you can access a charger. I charge daily and am currently averaging around 75mpg.

generally I'm careful where I park - I usually park in spaces at row ends etc.

I've had a gen 1 coupe, now a roadster, which are gen 2.

Roadster is a nicer looking, in my view, much much rarer car.

However, roadsters rattle (windows, roof mech sometimes), coupes just don't.

I think the sweet spot is a gen2 coupe. But I love the rarity and roof down of mine to keep with it.

Can't believe these are 11 years old now,and still a rare sight on the roads, I purchased one back in March 2015 but didn't keep it for long. I am limited to space, but thinking of possibly buying another one with the view of a modern future classic...

I have a 2019 roadster, purchased earlier this year with low mileage (21k). Very rarely charge it, typically do before a "long" journey but no real need to. As an example, I drive it every weekend but I have only 3 charging events logged on my EV charger.

I'd definitely be using the roof as the door in a multi-story with the average size of parking spaces + the inevitable SUV you end up parking next to...

So our i8 went in and out of BMW Glasgow ok with no surprise costs. They didn't reset the service lights so had to point this out and even then they missed a couple. Nor does the service show up in idrive. I know I can reset the service lights myself so might just do this.

Attention to detail does seem lacking in a lot of places now. A Volvo specialist did terrible geometry after replacing front shocks earlier this year; it was like a Nascar such was the pull to the left. Another company I used for all season tyres fitted one the wrong way despite the rotation arrows.

I did speak with a decent indy though but they couldn't fit me in for a month. Brakes will probably be due next year so will give them a go.

The service should show in the I drive. I'd ask them to resolve that for you. May affect warranty etc in the future?

Thank you, yes I did have that concern too. I've spoken with them and will bring the car in next time I'm passing.

A previous service that was done at an EV specialist before my ownership also doesn't appear in idrive. However BMW had a record of it having been done.

Battery warranty expired last month and the car's warranty is up in January. Not sure if I'll extend it or not.
