I’m in the market for a new family wagon and want something petrol engined, with lots of space for family duties and European holidays.

I’ve all but ruled out a third gen Cayenne 3.0T/S due to the uncertainty around the cost of getting one accepted under a Porsche warranty.

So have turned my attention to the X5 40i and the 540i touring, although well spec’d examples of the latter are very rare.

Obviously the B58 engine is a faulty well known and reliable unit by now. Any particular points I should be aware of about the engine or either of the cars more widely?

If I don’t source a BMW AUC then plan to put a BMW warranty on whichever car I go with myself. Do BMW require an inspection for this these days? Or do they cover themselves by high premium for the first year?

both good choices, would lean towards the X5 if cayenne was short listed.

Had a good chat with one of the team at HJ BMW in Chester on Thursday.

They did a good job of convincing me that a 45e should still be in contention because of the benefit of the hybrid for daily running around and that the batteries are covered for 8 years by BMW.

I think that would work if I PCP’d it to protect myself from having to sell a car with little to no battery warranty in 3/4 years. But not if I choose to buy outright.

Still not got to drive a 40i yet, so need to sort that soon!

I drove an X5 45e at work a number of times and was so impressed I bought a 545e .... as an X5 45e was too big for my needs. I have been very impressed with the performance but the 5 series as in 545e is a bit quicker than the X5 45e.

The X5 45e oozes quality IMO but was just a bit too big and felt it compared to the 5 series. The 540i was not made in the facelift G30 AFAIK and became the 545e ... but no touring option sadly.

Very happy with my 2017 G31 540i. Very comfy on long loaded up journeys and a decent size for a family of four. Also drives very nicely when it’s not full of family. I held out for one with lots of kit, but most are well specced.

I’d only get the X5 if you really needed the extra space.

As an all-around package, the G31 540i has got to be one of the best cars BMW has ever made. I enjoy it as much as my M2; softer, heavier, and larger, but it drives extremely well, and is very comfy.

I have my F11 535i Touring up for sale at the moment as i'd rather go back to an X5. It's a lovely comfortable family car if a bit long, but i'd prefer the taller boot space in the X5 for my purposes.

I'd be looking at the X5 too.

I used my Dad's M50d to take them to the airport and it felt so well built, comfortable, easy to drive etc. I was surprised to be honest, my wife had an older shape 40d for a while which I liked but this is a cut above. Even better if it had a smoother petrol engine in it, I'm sure.

IDK, in the X5, I just see a 5 series with a more compromised drive.

I have only just discovered that they did a 545e in the G30 - shame they didn't do the touring as that would have been a great option.

I think I'm increasingly focussed on the X5 now, 40i but not ruling out a 45e if one comes up in budget up to 4 years old. That way it would mean I have the benefit of another 4 years of the BMW warranty on the battery pack.

I wanted to come back to this thread, as almost 8 years after selling my E81 130i, which had replaced an E90 330i, next week I will be back in a BMW!

Having kept my eye on Autotrader and the BMW AUC site, I started to get a good feel for the spec, age and mileage of car that represented the best value.

Between Christmas and New Year I found an X5 45e at a local car supermarket where I knew I would get to take it out for a while on my own. Although the car wasn't the spec or condition I wanted, it confirmed that the 45e was the way to go.

So fast forward to last week and whilst sat in my hotel room one night as I was working in London, I spotted an AUC X5 45e I'd had my eye on had been reduced by the dealer - making it what I thought to be the best value, spec and mileage car available.

Managed to sell my Audi Q5 this week and will be collecting a 22 plate Carbon Black X5 with coffee brown comfort seats next Wednesday!

Enjoy, I loved my 45e X5.

Currently in a 50e. 20,000 miles in, 50% done on electric, averaging 55.5mpg. Brakes are 10% worn and apart from the typical boot lid rattle which I sorted with Velcro felt it has been faultless, as was the 45e over 35,000 miles.

Enjoy!

Also have a X5 45e and it's been faultless (apart from a wheel speed sensor chewed by a fox) over 27.5k miles (24k electric)

Good choice, also have the coffee interior but went Tanzonite! (And chip-driven lower spec...)

My only gripe is the lack of adaptive cruise. I have the Tech and Comfort pack and assumed it would have adaptive cruise, it just has standard cruise control. What is even more baffling is that when not using cruise it will slow down for roundabouts, bends and a slower car ahead when you take your foot off the accelerator, not just regen braking, actual braking to stop running into the back of the car. It even slows down for left turns off main roads when you indicate to take the turning. Why couldn’t they just include adaptive cruise?

On my 45e I unlocked adaptive cruise for 500 quid. No such option on this one sadly.

Other than that a brilliant car, tows our caravan with ease and is quite quick enough when not towing.

Some great feedback as always guys, thanks.

I managed to find a pretty well specd one, only main things it doesn t seem to have is the comfort plus package and the merino leather.

But everything else I wanted is there, including the Driving Assist Professional which I believe includes the adaptive cruise.

Roll on Wednesday!

I’ll keep that in mind, thanks!

Getting excited now, hadn’t realised how much I wanted to get back to BMW.

Enjoy! I'd had my eye on a couple of M50i's, including a very well spec'd one also in Carbon Black.
