Engine turned itself off when bonnet opened

Car is a 2022 340i, this morning had a short drive, message came on that bonnet was not closed and to pull over safely and close it (probably did not close it properly a couple of days ago), by the time it was possible to do so car seemed to go into neutral and no power at all and the car stopped in a very akward place, is this some sort of safety procedure where the engine cuts out ? Searched online and cannot find an info regarding this.

My E46 (many generations earlier than yours) with SMG won't go into gear if it thinks the bonnet is open. I think it's a safety feature to stop you running yourself over while fiddling under the bonnet, or maybe just to avoid the possibility of it flipping up completely while driving. Maybe later cars are similar.

There some built in things like this. I'd got our F40 m135i parked on our drive running and I accidentally locked it, the horn beeped every 5 seconds until unlocked again.

Visited the dealer this morning and spoke to a technician and basically said he had not come across this before however presumed and put it down to some sort of safety feature, he said he would connect remotely to the car later on today in case their was a fault and let me know.

Yes it is.

If I recall correctly, opening the bonnet is one of the ways to deactivate the 48v system.

Well it's better than the bonnet wrapping itself round your windscreen, sounds like a good feature for those that can't close a bonnet.
