Sourcing an F22 M240i (2018-2020) - Advice on Spec & The Cur
Discussion
Hi everyone,
I’m currently in the market for a BMW M240i (F22) and was hoping for some collective wisdom from the sub on a few specifics before I pull the trigger.
The Goal: I’m looking for a 2018–2020 LCI model black or grey. I’m specifically hunting for the ZF8 Auto with under 60k miles.
The Must-Haves:
• Harman Kardon audio.
• Pro Navigation (Widescreen).
• Full BMW or specialist service history.
The Dilemma (Pre-GPF vs. Post-GPF):
I’m leaning towards a Pre-July 2018 build to avoid the GPF for the better exhaust note, but for the right car (lower miles/better spec), I’d consider a later 2019/20 model.
For those who have lived with both, is the sound difference significant enough to pass on a newer, lower-mileage Shadow Edition?
Also do most people just remove the GPF?
I’ve got the funds sitting ready for a straightforward private sale (no part-ex, no finance hurdles). If anyone here is thinking of moving theirs on or knows of an enthusiast-owned example that hasn't hit the mainstream sites yet, I’d love to hear about it via PM.
A few questions for the owners:
1. Is sunroof a must have?
2. Aside from the usual B58 coolant checks, is there anything specific to the 2018+ electronics I should be wary of?
Thanks in advance for any leads or advice!

These and the 140 are pretty reliable.
The GPF cars are pretty muted as standard, however you can have the back box modded (modstock are good) so that it looks standard but is much louder whilst keeping the GPF, or you can remove the GPF completely and get a blanking plug to avoid the EML. It doesn't seem to be an issue with MOTs quite yet, as I suspect if testers don't know what a standard GPF-equipped one looks like then they wont know it's missing.
On options, I'd say sunroof is a must if it has a black interior as it can be pretty dark - but fine without on cars with the Oyster or Coral interior. Mine had adaptive dampers (EDC) which I appreciated for crappier road surfaces but loads of owners go for the passive setup and put some Bilstein dampers on as there's a kit which is relatively cheap and improves the ride a fair bit.
I'd make sure the service history is up to date, these can have quite long service intervals depending on usage but the oil filters like to disintegrate when they are left too long unchanged, can be tricky to get sorted but still not too expensive. Only other point is insurance, these seem to be really pricey even when compared with the full fat M cars, presumably because they're a bit cheaper, get ragged, crashed and stolen.
