My 2021 Z4 M40i has come to the end of its warranty and have no plans to sell it.

I’ve been reading a lot about OPF filter delete and a tune to help the engine breathe more easily, give a little more power and a little more sound.

I know the ECU has to be sent of to be unlocked but my worry is when it does come time to sell or trade - particularly to a BMW dealer, even if I put the OPF filter back and flash the ECU back to factory, will the resale value of the car be hurt or will a BMW dealer even be interested in the car ??

I think the BMW software will tell them it has been tampered with if they check, that's what I read anyway.

I believe BMW will be able to tell - even if the map is flashed back to original.

I think they have a flash counter - which will count the number of times the chips have been written to.

BMW will be able to tell even if flashed back to standard. Their systems now are well up to spotting cars which have been tuned or have been 'fiddled' with. Their software delves into many areas.

When I sold my G42 M240i even though it would have needed a Femto unlock they took the car away to run checks to make sure it hadn't been mapped previously / wasn't mapped before confirming they would take it as a trade in !!

If you’re worrying about stuff like that then it might not be for you? There’s always an element of risk when tuning, hence the disclaimers you have to sign before most work is undertaken.

Maybe your right
Funny as I used to modify my cars in my youth when the cars I owned had less value and were less computerised
Now at nearly 60 I find I am being more cautious.

Other side is if it breaks, it gets fixed and you carry on!

Not specifically responding to your original query, but if you fit an OPF delete or downpipe you will need the warning mapped\coded out.

Previously had Milltek OPF delete combined with Wagner 200 cell downpipe with the B58. To be honest, the tone was not nice, sounded hollow, rapsy and welll... just a bit cheap. Refitted the OPF delete but retained the Wagner downpipe and it sounded so much better. Not as loud, but produced a much nicer sound and less pops and bangs (a good thing).

Would definitely recommend MHD.
