Good morning,

I have a 2013 BMW R1200RT that is great, owes me nothing and provides my touring / luggage carrying option.

Little point in upgrading yet as it does everything well.

I am keen to get another bike to go with it that is, perhaps, more of a compromise.

Always been a Honda man previously owning a CBR 600, Fireblade, Varadero, Blackbird etc.

I am reasonably up to speed with the era of bikes I have grown up with, the 2000 - 2010 (FJR, VFR, CBR, BMW R / RT etc) but little knowledge of what else ‘exists’.

MT 09, Triumph various, Kawasaki etc - no idea what is out there really.

I like the idea of a CB1300, a Triumph triple of some description, Suzuki 1250 and others.

Reliability, build quality and some power the key factors.

Any thoughts?

Perhaps also consider a CB1100.

Can’t go wrong with a 1300 though.

Exactly the sort of advice I was after.

No idea it existed. May or may not be for me but now I know it exists!

I would highly recommend a Speed Triple, wonderful engine and so much character. I would also give a big thumbs up to any of the earlier Fireblades, maybe a 954. The MT09 has a superb engine but the throttle maps are terrible on the early examples. That aside they are great bikes.

Rumour has it there is a gorgeous low mileage VFR on eBay, if you were to type in the keywords 'Conifer Green VFR'..... for a shade over your proposed budget..... Commenting for a friend, you see.....

Get something different. Don't get another behemoth as you'll be doubled up on the same positives AND negatives

Go for an older sportbike,TL1000,FZR/YZF etc.

I find my TL more comfortable than the BMW1200RS I had before it.

If you like the do everything sort of bike and are a Honda man then try a Crossrunner. You want a 2015 or later. Something like this:

Does everything, lovely V4 motor, excellent build quality a bit heavy and the wind noise can be a pain. OEM panniers are like hen's teeth though. Other than that mine has been brilliant.

In the spirit of recommending your own bike and you'd pick up a cracker for £4k, 954 FireBlade

Tiny fuel tank spoils those but if that doesn't bother you they are a good option.

Some great options.

To clarify, no intention to get anything like my current bike as I already have it!

VFR - lovely thing.

CB1100 - quite taken by them and doing some research.

I'm glad you're in Essex, because if you were anywhere near by me I would have to have that, and I don't have room for another bike!

Oooo, those are a lovely looking bike. Fantastic colour. From an era when you could actually ride your superbike on the road.
