Maybe I've been living under a rock and this is more common than I realise.

I was driving through a 50mph limit when a bike came flying past me just as it reached the first speed camera. Once he'd overtaken me, he casually reached behind him and flipped his number plate horizontally so it couldn't be read. rolleyes

I'd never seen or even heard of anyone doing that before. I'd imagine if he ever got caught, the consequences would be pretty severe.

It's been a thing for at least the past 20 years of me riding, but I'd say that most don't do it.

Even for the law breakers, it's easier just to slow down for cameras.

For the committed law breakers, a fake plate or no plate is the "better" choice.

Speeding through average speed zones is just stupid too. I would always stick to those even if they were only forward facing. You stick out like a sore thumb if everyone is doing 50 and you fly past at 90.

A st load of them flew past me on a variable speed section of the M4 the other week, 40-60 limits, comfortably 30-40mph faster.

It's like everything now, compliance with basic standards of decency is optional, because who is going to do anything about it?

So he only adjusted the plate after passing the first camera over the limit?

Depending on the camera type, sonny Jim may be getting an unwelcome letter. Average cameras aren't necessarily just average cameras.

Not really, I'm a biker and flip up plates are the bike equivalent of those chameleon windscreen tints, just marks the owner out as an absolute throbber.

Why?

Being true and not wanting to start a fight with the knuckle draggers is entirely reasonable.

Saw a post on a police FB page the other day where someone was caught with one - he's in serious st for it - getting treated similar to a signal jammer. Think I'll stick to the speed limits* rather than take the risk

Flip up plates are a massive Issue if you get caught with it as it Perverting the course of justice.
It's a lot better to go out with 2 bits of broken number plate on the bike. "Well bloody hell look at that. It was there when I left home hehebiggrin

Must admit I'm with dibblecorse on this one. You're allowed to be the exception to the rule though! wink

It used to be a thing back in the 90's, but folks still got caught.
With the amount of cctv about these days I suppose it will be quite easy to track the bike all the way home 🙂

I must admit, having a chameleon windscreen tint is the best way to make a nice car look cheap and yes, flip numberplate users are throbbers unless you are James Bond. I'll get my coat...
