Despite maintaining my battery through the use of my CTEK charger and keeping it in good environmental conditions, my motobatt has finally died. It still cranks the bike, but it has started to crank weakly recently.

I only bought it recently... In June 2012!

I'll be buying another motobatt to replace it.

I guess this thread is just really to give my own anecdotal experience of owning a motobatt for 14 years.

Last 2 I got were the ones you put the acid in yourself. Very traumatic with a boiling hot battery as it sorted itself out, which I dont remember from the first one. Didnt last very long either.
I would go for something sealed in future.

Modern battery’s quality has nose dived in recent years, I’ve returned 2 Yuasa, plus other cheaper brands over the last 2 years, both car & bike.

Its funny you say that I had similar experience.

Similar to the OP however, I had a Motobatt for years, it was still working fine, I had to fling it out though because the body was starting to leak. I'd be wary of keeping a bike battery that long, the plastic body will eventually be degraded by the sulfuric acid. Look for any decolourisation, softening, normally time to chuck it when you see that.

Maybe, what has changed in recent years is the increase on electrical demands with trackers and such like plus the increase in people hooking their batteries up to chargers constantly, which can be detrimental to the battery as well.

I’ve noticed a pattern in some mates that are always going through batteries!

I also have a motobatt on 10+ years, it’s removed from the bike over Winter, kept in the house with all my other batteries and I charge it once a month, that’s worked for me anyway.

I do the same over the winter months with mines, the Yuasa's I had to return under warranty were starting a 98 and 12 plate bikes, with nothing on them. Not disagreeing with what you write above mind you.

I'd always replace with lithium. Better starting amps and significantly lighter.
