I’ve just passed my A licence and have been window shopping for bikes and then insurance…cheapest was around £1200 on a 700 supermoto.
Given I’m 50 years old, clean licence etc I thought this was expensive??
I tried a KTM SMT and cheapest quote £2250
Is this to be normal for bike insurance to be more than a car?

The value of the bike makes a massive difference compared to cars I’ve found. Generally due to the high number of theft claims or single bike accidents.

Personally I’d start on a cheaper bike, after about 2 or 3 years you’ll see prices plummet.

I’ve just reinsured on my Z1000SX, £154 a year fully comp.

Postcode, security and garaged are the next key factors, harder to control obviously but extra chains, tracker, building some form of structure to keep the bike in will help.

High chance of a supermoto being nicked or crashed, they are popular with the surron yobos.

It's always been expensive for a powerful bike and a new rider.
More so with a new or expensive bike.

High chance of a claim, even a low speed falling over moment can be £££ in cosmetic repairs.

Try some quotes for something older, or smaller cc or both.

Then there's the postcode factor. And basic security like keeping it in a locked garage.

The question is, do you want to save £500 on insurance by spending a couple of years on a small/cheap bike?
You can enjoy yourself on a 250, but the draw of bigger bikes is always there.

50 years old, brand new rider, zero no claims, no continuous motorcycle insurance, 80hp supermoto…

The big problem for you is 'lack of recent experience'.

I'm 50s, I've had my full licence more than 30 years, and last year I bought my first bike in many years. Because that meant answering '0' to how many continuous years of recent riding experience, I paid ~£3k to insure it last year (Streetfighter V2S).

This year, the renewal came through at 1/6 of that and I actually paid even less to the point it's nearly 90% cheaper this year, just for having a year's NCB and a year's 'experience'.

When I found out how much the Ducati was going to cost to insure I starting checking some other bikes and all were more than I expected, but entering other values for the recent experience showed it would quickly drop in subsequent years.

New inexperienced rider. High powered bike. High accident risk bike (they ain't daft, supermoto's aren't used for gentle bimbling). Very high theft risk bike. And we haven't even considered your postcode and security arrangements yet.
What did you expect? Of course it's expensive, you would have the same high quotes if you said new licence and ferrari.
Either downgrade your bike expectations for the first year or pay up and try not to crash or have it pinched.

£1200 to insure a bike you fancy is probably worth doing. The alternative is to get a cheap first "big bike", and there's a lot of merit in that route, but you'll move it on and lose something in depreciation that makes the sums close enough, you're probably as well getting the bike you want.

Passed my A about 4 months ago.

Pay just under £300 FC (with ability to ride other bikes TP) for an L3 GSX-R 600 with a £5000 value at 41 years old.

I think its just a case of shopping around massively and also depends on how quickly you want the cover to start etc Noticed that that makes a massive difference. Brother in-law got a quote recently for a car that was £200 less a year if the policy started 5 days later than the day he purchased the car!

I paid £380 for my first year insurance, 2 years ago on a street triple 675 2013 worth about £4k at the time, 5000 mile allowance and no pillion cover. I had no previous riding experience, did a CBT and DAS over the course of 3 weeks.

I know you can't compare apples with oranges, but yours seems a lot.

I’m in N.Ireland so we usually pay a little more for insurance so was expecting that but I think over £1000 is excessive.
Bike theft here is pretty rare, bike would be garaged etc.
A DRZ 400 is the still coming up as £700.
I’ve just used comparison sites for rough idea so is there any other insurance companies known for bikes?
Probably just have to suck it up and bike theft bike I want.

If it’s the new DRZ that won’t be cheap on insurance. Very new so not an awful lot of data, and both S and SM models very desirable to undesirables.

As I said earlier you’re a brand new rider, with no continuous insurance, zero no claims and in one of the highest risk factor brackets for an insurer. Also trying to insure a niche sub genre of bike known for being a theft magnet, general tomfoolery and (in the case of the 690/701/700) potentially a handful for a brand new biker.

You’ll get significantly cheaper quotes going for a less desirable, less hooligan-y bike for a couple of years. Second or third year in, your insurance should come down significantly.

Alternatively £700 seems like a bargain for an £8k motorbike with no riding history and just passed your test.

Check out insurance on a KTM Duke or Adventure 390 and SV650?

An oldish unfaired bike will be the cheapest option but as others have said a new to you bike and no experience is what’s making it expensive.

Thebikeinsurer comparison site has always given me decent quotes.

I’d say with 4 years no claims and a bike you’ve owned for more than a year an annual premium in the £100 range is more normal for anything that isn’t a super naked or sports bike.

I passed my test last week at 42 and have a Kawasaki Z650. Insurance was £485 with no no claims. Kept in a locked garage at home.

Might be worth trying a different bike for a year or two then? Find something you like that also has reasonable insurance?
