The thread on General Gassing at the moment (www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=165368&f=23&h=0) is a salutary reminder that there are a sizeable number of other road users that not only dislike bikes, but who actively look for confrontation with bikers. It's pretty shocking to be reminded that these attitudes persist, even among sports car enthusiasts. It's one thing to be aware of other drivers who are poorly skilled or negligent, but another thing completely to remind ourselves that some people out there would actually gain satisfaction from doing bikers physical harm. I used to think it was paranoid to think that some car drivers are out to get us. I now think it's a vital component of staying alive...

Ive just fitted car crunching desert crash bars to my bike. Ok, 80% reasoning is that they offer protection to my legs if im side swiped or if i come off, but the other 20% of me knows what damage they do to cars should contact occur.

I'm very lazy, so I only read the first and last pages on that thread.

First, I think people physically threatening each other, or each other's property, is totally uncivilised, "playground politics", and we should really rise above that. We all make mistakes, I'll try to give you a bit of space if you make a mistake, and I hope you'll do the same for me.

Second, I see no reason why cars shouldn't keep pace with bikes sometimes. Not a game I play very often, but just occasionally I "go for a burn", and about half the time I find I keep up with the bike, generally country A-roads. About 80% of bikers are all smiles and waves as we roll into the next town, about 20% seem to go into a sulk cos a car has DARED to keep up with them!

Third, motorways / big dual carrigeways. My pet dislike is bikers trying to create a 4th lane where there isn't one, between lanes 2 and 3 for example, and undertaking without even waiting to see if the car in their way is going to move over. No problem at all with you getting there before me, and I'd like to think I am quite good at pulling over and not hogging the outside lane, but these both seem like unsafe practices to me.

Sometimes I give you bikers an 'ikkle prop with my bumber just to make sure you're in control. Sometimes I see if I can chuck a coke can in your wheels.

All in good spirit you understand.

WSB had some good racing last weekend, worth a watch if you get the chance.
