Hi guys, ive been wanting to get a "proper" bike for years now but money and the need for practical transport has meant its not possible... Well now i have the chance to get my leg over so to speak so was wandering what you thought would make a good first sports bike.

My budget is around 3-4k. So far ive been looking at a few CBR600's and R6's...

What would make a good starter bike?

Am i insane to jump straight on a VFR1000 should i desire one (which i do!)?

Comments welcome... Oh, and i will need to get my license also!

Do you mean VTR 1000 and are you talking about the SP1/2 or the Firestorm?

What is your riding history? If you've never ridden anything larger than a scooter then a big twin could get you in lots of trouble.

600s will be plenty fast enough for you. CBRs and Thundercats make good starter 600s.

if you want a CBR600 i would definatly try and find a little more money and get a CBR600RR, if you cant i would go with the R6 or maybe a GSXR600?

You can't go wrong with a thundercat as a 1st bike. Plenty of power, comfy and handles well. Pick one up 2nd hand, run it for a year and you'll get nearly all your money back and buy the bigger bike then.

I liked mine better than the zx6r I bought after it and it didn't scare me stupid like the zxr750 I had before it (bit of a rash post test purchase).
