I currently have a RE Meteor which does 90% of what I need but doesn't have the enthusiasm of the last 2 bikes I had (KTM 790, Triumph Scrambler 1200).

Copied from someone else who posted - I guess I want this - 'something that is an event to ride and will make you excited to own and look at, especially when you get to your coffee stop.'

I am also taking a sabbatical from work next year so in theory can ride more and do longer trips, maybe even abroad.

My current options are:
1. Triumph 675 r (the early ones)
2. Triumph 765 R/ RS (although I like the ones which have a LED strip in the light but am confused about what year they are and I prefer the larger tank - I realise the newer ones have a smaller tank and are a lot more spendy).
3 An early R9T - I quite like the boxer engine.
4. A v-strom 650 - but it fails in the looks department

I also like having luggage, so whatever ever I get needs to be have an easy mount system, as I quite like the ease of being able to drop things in a bag.

So my question is - Triumph 675/765 or R9T. I have had 2 street triples before but will have to test ride one again to see if I can comfortably ride one with the my back issues.

What I do want is:
1. Relatively light weight
2. Not an overbearing amount of power, something I guess around 90-110hp
3. Able to fit luggage
4. half naked (acccepting I will put screens on the bikes above).

I only really ride when its dry and warm, my days of winter commuting and riding are well and truly over.

A colleague had an early R9T, he was very pleased with it.
It certainly stood out among the crowd at the time.
Likewise I'm sure many people say great things about the Triumphs.

It's a matter of finding a good example at a fair price and buying something you think you'll get on with.
With an eye to servicing and all the other costs.
It's also good to pick something that should be easy to re-sell sometimes, aim to buy the best you can find of a favoured model.

Look at the V Strom 800 if you want a bit more excitement over the 650 but not the weight of the 1050. I had both the RE and standard as loaners and was thoroughly impressed by both.

A Tuono 660 used is around the £6k mark, might be another suggestion.

From that list, the Triumph 765rs. Very flexible bike. Will do a lot of things well. Have lots of admirers out there.

Just bought a V-strom 1000. While it was never meant to be a rocket ship, I personally wouldn't want to be on one with even less power.

Less powerful, but the "road" version of the Triumph Tiger 800/900 if you need more comfort? (900 might be a stretch for £6k)

You have the R9T as a choice, but have you considered the Kawasaki Z900RS? Killer retro looks (I'm biased as I own one) and rides like a charm.

I thought about the z900rs and it is indeed beautiful but I suspect I would get in better with the z650 and the street triple I still prefer as it’s light.

I really need to do a test ride

OP if your interested I will be very shortly putting my 2011 675 STR up for sale, one owner 8k miles, never seen salt or rain...it looks like new.

Even I'm tempted by this, and I've had one, and have 2 Daytona's sat there...

Daytona's...I know them well, I had one of the first 06 bikes when they were launched, I had it five years and stupidly traded it in for my STR...I should have just bought the STR and kept them both.

Tornado Red Daytona 675 with TOR exhaust...lovely.
