Hi all,

I've recently purchased a Multistrada 950 as my second bike, a year after passing.my test

My first bike (which I'm now looking to sell) is a Triumph street scrambler,

Keen to swap the triumph for something a bit different to both of these bikes. After riding the MTS the engine on the scrambler doesn't really get me excited anymore!

I'd though about a Street triple, or a XSR900 but have also been looking at older sportsbikes, though a little put off by possible upkeep requirements

Looking for a chalk to the MTS cheese but also something reliable

Budget up to about £6k but preferably much cheaper (3-4k).

Cheers

GSXR 750.

Any of the K models but 4 or 5 would be my choice. It’s very tractable but the rush and sound over 9k rpm is epic.

Unless you get unlucky it won’t ever go wrong.

Yes , wife rarely gets excited about anything these days , but she loved this ( think it was colour / look ) gsxr750 & kept calling me back to look at it when we were browsing the show room.

£6k preferred £3/4k. Worried about upkeep and wants reliability. scratchchin

I had a 950 mts along with my GSXR600 and they worked very well together. The gsxr engine made the mts fee like a tractor though.

I've ridden bikes for 35 years and now have my ideal 3 bike garage. 1992 ZXR750 (identical to the my first big bike back in the day), 2002 Suzuki Hayabusa, and my first new bike a 2026 Honda Transalp (which I traded in a KTM990SMT I had had for 10 years).

I would defo' say a sports bike to go with the MS, and an older analogue one has charm for me. The tech' on the Transalp is great for long days out (and it is comfortable too) but for a weekend razz' an old sportsbike is a treat for the senses. The above suggestion or a GSXR is a good one. I wouldn't suggest anything as big as the 'Busa though, even with so many years of experience it still astonishes me how easy it is to get to bends 20-30mph faster than you think you are doing until you look down at the clocks. Any Japanese 750 would I think be a good shout. Happy hunting.

I'm 51 years in on riding bikes and I have a BMW 1200 gs adv for touring and a KTM 500 exc f with extra set of supermoto wheels for fun off road and hooning about in summer. Perfect combo!

I wanted something a little different to my Monster and to test out an older sports bike.

Bought an '06 Daytona 675 and I freaking love it. Bought for £4k and they are all roughly around your budget, I would highly recommend.

A V twin and a Triple is a good combo.

Or older V4 Honda.

Something completely different.

How about a trail bike and membership of the TRF.

A scooter.

I know folks with all sorts of exotic collections and the bike that gets used the most frequently is a scooter. Cheap, chuckable, brain out, economical, loads of storage, narrow, lightweight, small.

What kind of rides would you expect to be doing, which would be better on a different bike?

I have a little trail bike as a second bike, it's good for short trips, into town where it's easier to park etc.

You could get more of a sportsbike, if you think you can get value out of it without losing your licence.
You could get a classic to fettle and fiddle with.
A track bike.
A trials bike.

Scooter is not a daft suggestion if it aligns with the kind of journeys you want to do. Would it get you out of your car?
Likewise, I'd buy an ebike if it matched the trips I need to do, but 99% I'm better walking or in the car.
I do get value from a couple of bikes with pedals!

Another lumpy v twin…that would be a no from me as much as the bike looks lovely and will probably hold its value well.

Is £6k buying a nice one? Or one at all?

Thanks for all the replies so far, I've done a few insurance quotes and the difference is staggering across models and there are some outliers that don't make that much sense to me...

To note, these are all done through the same comparison site with the same background info and no NCD or excess. So not truly representative but a good comparison of costs. All costs are real, but the power/weight figures are just for my own interest and were AI generated so take them with a pinch of salt
The Katana really stands out as a surprise, guess they don't have much data on them!

Some great suggestions so far, I think at the moment I'm leaning towards an older Jap sportsbike, and have enquired about an older (92) GSXR 750. Unfortunately the newer GSXRs don't look feasible to insure, though I will check with my current multi-bike provider.

I was in a similar situation a few years ago, I had a 2017 Speed Trilple R... great bike but never really riden a sports bike.
End of 2021 decided to bit the bullet and search ebay etc... found a great 2007 CBR600rr. I was riding that bike more than the Triumph!

Still have the CBR now, but looking to sell as looking for something a little more upright. Would definitely recommend the CBR. Nothing really goes wrong with it, turn key and ride.

Worth looking at a ZX-6R B1H if insurance is a problem.

Really surprised to see a K6 GSXR 750 at near £1k when you can insure a '92 for under £100.

I just ran a quote and Bennetts was £78 on a K5 with £600 excess. Plenty of options in the £100 range for me.
