I have a small oil leak on a 4.5. By small I mean it has created an area of around 5 inches round on the garage floor. It is located slightly rear and to the left of the centre of the engine bay (as viewed from the top). The engine oil level is fine. Could this be serious or are small leaks to be expected? Should I get it checked out right away

sounds sort of if it could be coming from the sump plug, I seem to remeber thats just about where mine is, can you see it from underneath, the sump plug should be on the side of the sump right at the bottom?

I've had a similarly very small oil leak on my 4.5 for a while now; Fernies diagnosed it as the oil pressure switch, said it wasn't anything to worry about unduly. Doesn't affect oil pressure and the car's done 3000 miles since I first noticed it without any other issues. What oil are you using? Might be worth trying Mobil 1 Motorsport (15W/50) instead of the regular 10W/40 and see if that helps?
Alex.

Its worth getting it checked over, but small leaks are not uncommon. The gearbox castings are pretty porous and weep oil through the alloy for example.
