Do chimera"s use oil between services, most new cars dont use any oil between services and that can be 10 or even 20,000 miles now so do you put oil in yours and about how much (exclude any track days when its running a lot harder.
Thanks Ron

1000 miles per Litre is not uncommon. These are not 'modern' engines you know - they need TLC!

Well my last one used about 1ltr to the 1000 miles but my current one uses about half that at most...

Strangely my Audi A6 2.4 v6 uses more oil than either of my Tivs ever have and Audi have fully checked it and confirmed "that's normal"....

Mine uses around a litre every thousand... you'll see some people with cars that use less, occasionally some that use more. Seems to be normal.

The concensus does seem to be that you do not need to exclusively stick to Mobil 1 - and the prices that implies. Which makes oil usage seem like less of an issue...

(PS. Mine's for sale...

I have a vauxhall zafira diesel (company car) which needs to be topped up with oil alot, It can run to the bottom of the dipstick in 10,000 mile. I'm now upto 68000 miles but during running in it ran nearly empty in 6000 mile, and this is a current model.

Just thought I'd thow in my 2 penny worth

consumption varies a lot with the grade of oil you use and how hard you drive.

Chaps, it's not specifically Chim related, but an old company car of mine (Toyota) used oil quite alarmingly - 5-7 litres between (9K) services was not uncommon. Happily I didn't pay for the oil, but a concern nonetheless.

The service bulletin related to the consumption was shown to me - basically Toyota engineered the engine to burn a bit of oil at the top end in the absence of lead in the petrol that used to do the same job.

Given that the trusty old V8 harks from days of yore, could this explanation be applied here ? Just a thought.

Greg.

My 98 Chim 450 has only used a half liter since the last service about 2000 miles ago. Oil is still clean. The car has about 30K total miles.

I have driven American V8's my whole life, and that seems normal. A liter every thousand miles seems high, but as long as it ain't smokin.....

My 400 never used any either.

I think a more accurate answer to this question might be;

400 - little or no oil
450 - uses some, check dipstick
500 - 1 litre/1000 miles.

I've got a 500 Chim and i use about a pint every 2 weeks.

Must admit to driving it hard though.

Just check every saturday morning, whilst checking coolant, pas, clutch fluid etc etc.

Cheers

Ive got a 4 litre, it has gone from being slightly over full on the dip stick to half way, in about 4000 miles.

More you thrash it the more it uses - use Mobil 1 Motorsport though - thinker than normal Mobil 1. Still a bit thin really for such an old design of motor though. I used 1.25 liters in 1200 miles last time I did and acurate check - not great but not bad....

Just read the subject Oil for Tamora
It appears that not everone uses mobil 1
and not every garage use it.
Read a topic yesterday on PH where a dealer recomended something else and the owner said it made the car sound much better, ( carnt remember where or who )
So is Mobil best or just a sponsorship deal ?
Dont forget to check your oil
Cheers Ron

I used to work for Castrol in their engine test department. Admittedly this was a few years ago, but Mobil 1 was by far the best oil we ever tested there. It produced far less wear and less deposits than anything Castrol were making at the time.

It probably is a bit thin for the engine, but apart from using a bit it's not going to cause any problems.

Just for interest, the whole Magnatec thing was 'discovered' while I was working there.
When we stripped down an engine one day the piston was covered in this browny coloured stuff. It caused a bit of concern for a while. 'Imagine if any engine fails and they strip it down and find this - we'll be screwed' was the thought. Then some bright spark came up with the idea of marketting it - 'Coats your engine with a protective gold layer!' or something like that.
