well im now fedup with the starter motor playing up but dont want to pay the £383 that TVR dealer wants ,where can i get one reasonably cheap that i can fit myself ,and does the range rover one fit..its a 93 chimaera 4.3 pre serpentine ,and the starter motor fails when the engine is hot ie about 90 degrees ,yes i have considered the heat wrap for the exhaust but the starter should not fail because it is hot ,and its embarrassing to have to chuck water on it when everyone is watching...

To avoid embarrassment make sure you have your back to the crowd when you're sprinkling

Not sure you need to go to the main dealer for a new starter motor. My local cheapo garage charged me 100 pounds for a replacement starter and 30 quid to fit it.

Couple of suggestions:

Take the starter serial number and check with Landrover for replacement.

If you are able to take it off (they are tight) check it over and see if it is worth overhauling.

I took the solenoid apart and rubbed it down lightly and used copper grease sparingly to prevent friction.

Solenoid for '98 was available separately.

Still OK after 9months.

had same problem - get down to Tower View at the bottom of the M1 - speak to Mark. He fits specially uprated starter motors and did mine for about £125 I think. Better still get him to fit the heat shield at the same time to be extra sure !

Sent the starter to TowerView from my 400se a few months ago. They did a superb job and charged about £100.
