I noticed that the cats in my Y piece were missing, (presumably you can see them by peering inside?) but they are intact in the manifolds. Are the ones in the Y piece just secondary cats? therefore MOT friendly? Personally I don't like the sound, I much prefer the standard lovely drone, not too loud so they have to go back... The question is, there is a second hand Y piece on Ebay complete with cats for £170 or offer in almost perfect condition, is that a better option than finding and fitting cats to my Y piece?? cheers

It’s the other way round. The cat in your y piece will get it through an mot where as the smaller cats in each manifold can be removed but in truth it doesn’t add power that you’d notice.and is mainly a way to reduce under bonet heat.

If your Y piece has no cat you will be experiencing a very loud droning and the exhaust level will be at least 94-98 decibels which is enough to damage hearing after awhile and definitely would not pass an mot.

Just because you can’t see the cat doesn’t mean it’s not there.

To remove the main cat from y piece it will have to be cut open so if yours is de catted I’d expect to see a weld line which is obviously not standard on the y piece body.

If no dodgy looking weld line then the cat will still be in place.

Oh right, I thought you could see them by peering down the end, but you, there appears to be no dodgy welding that I can see. I'm curious as to why mine is a tad louder than it should be then as all the exhaust looks standard to me I think

Exhaust fkery is usually done from above part of the silencer you wont see any welding etc whilst its fitted to the car IME its usually detectable by ear stock sounds good sleeved sounds w@nk rofl seriously though if you compare sleeved to a stocker the difference is clear

The exhaust is fairly easy to remove so you could do that to check if the centre box has been hacked.

Why chance it. Remove all doubt and get a Clive F 'Y' piece with a sports CAT.

Ask an MoT testing station to do an emissions test, it will fail without a cat.

yeah I'll have to have a look, I always assumed it was de-catted cos of the noise (only guessing) as it seems a bit quicker than my last 400, hey maybe TVR put a cheeky 4.3 in there as I heard they done that if they ran out of 400 engines ..... yeah right, I should be so lucky lol.

Personally I don't like the sound of any of the sleeved/cherry bomb set up, standard is so nice and more than loud enough.

Any way belle, the rack was done within 3 days by that company I mentioned for 400 quid and a local friendly mechanic I found, took it off and replaced, tracking and a smoke test on the engine (as it doesn't run well) for £250, I thought that was ok

Seems like your making progress, with regards to the exhaust it does sound good as standard and less to worry about come Mot time.
There is always someone who wants to go louder so if yours has been modified a swap for a standard one would make sense.
I seem to remember it did sound a bit louder but it didn't sound like a sleeved car, maybe a partial sleeve.
Not sure if you have driven it on the roads yet but ticking over on the drive all the time is no good for them.

Well if what British TVR said was correct, I can only assume all my cats are in place as I saw the ones in the manifold and the car isn't 94db that's for sure, but something has been done, I get it back today so I'll have a look underneath when I've got time

For clarity.
Pre cats are in the manifolds. Main cat in y piece.
From there you can now go to the exhaust which can also be part/ fully sleeved.

Pre cats out adds a bit of drone but not obnoxious.
Main cat out creates a lot more noise and definitely creates a loud droning which on a longer journey will become tiresome.
Removal of baffles in exhaust adds even more noise as now you basically have an unsilenced exhaust system.
Often regarded as sounding like a tug boat which isn’t a compliment.

Often if the silencer has been cut open and exhaust de baffled it’s done with exhaust off and most welded back up so when exhaust is in the car it’s impossible to tell. You often have to remove the exhaust to check if indeed it’s been re welded on top of the silencer box.

Cool thanks, so I best keep my eye out for a silencer I recon, the sound isn't that bad just louder than standard and as the cats seem to be in place then can only be the silencer I guess

Its actually easy to test if the cats are in place for piece of mind if you can loan a infrared temperature-gun the temp differential will be huge between cat area and the exhaust plain area

I have a spare main cat ( not for sale) but checked to see if you can see the cat inside. With an inspection mirror and torch it is clearly visible so an easy check if you are unsure.
