I have recently got my car back from a 6 week session at a garage. The car was delivered back all clean and waxed although I did notice some large damp patches on the roof and rear section which I took to be still damp from washing. However, 48 hours on the patches are still there and appear to be oil/grease marks. Does anyone know how these can be removed whilst still preserving the waterproofing or will this be a professional job?

Firtly, give the garage the opportunity to put it right. If they did it, it's up to them to undo it.

If this fails get some Renovo (or similar) dry cleaning spray and clean the roof. Then you might need to use their roof renovator to get the colour even again. Finally re-water proof it with Thompsons, Fabsil, or Renovo sealer.

That should do it.

Ifthe garage wont help, this may work, liberally apply fabsil to the area and then put some tissue or other absorbent material on to the stain and press down on to it, this should draw the smeg up by the wonders of capillary action. You may need to do it a few times. Hopefully the solvent in the fabsil will break it down a bit. When clean re fabsil to finish. Not wanting to dishearten you but they will probably deny all knowledge of it.

I got wax out of a carpet with by ironing paper towels over stain (or newspaper). Worked a treat and can't see why it couldn't work for a fabric roof.

Hmmm interesting, ironing the roof. At what temperature does carbon fibre go all wonky ?

Just read my post back and I guess it does sound a bit stupid, I certainly wouldn't iron MY Chimaera, so why I thought someone else might is beyond me!! Made myself chuckle though!! Sorry, I'll stop preaching from the 'Housewivies Big Bumper Book of Tips' from now on!!

The theory is sound though, and if any of you HAVE got wax stains in clothes or on carpet then maybe it's been useful!

Carbon Fibre? - You sure? I reckon it's just glassfibre myself!

Any degrease solvent should remove it, then Thompson it.

I have to admit I wasn't too sure to start off. It was only when I was trying to stuff the roof into the freezing compartment of my fridge to get some chewing gum off that I noticed
Seriously though, watch how you clean a patch on these material surfaces, If you rub too hard you'll wind up with a light patch which look much worse.
You could always pour grease over the whole of the roof, that way it'd all be the same colour

Nah, it's bit of GRP with a Carbon Fibre sheet stuck on it methinks. Not sure what CF costs, but the replacement price for a roof panel says GRP similar to the bodywork to me.

I'm at the garage for a service tomorrow - I'll check with a knowledgable person (i.e. not a saleman).

BODY
2 door, 2 seat convertible laid up by hand in glass reinforced polyester resin. Laminated front windscreen with semiframeless door windows. Single piece carbon fibre roof panel with fold down rear header, hand trimmed in Mohair fabric.

Quote from Shadowninja's website

if you store the removable roof in it you can still fit a couple of suitcases! Yes, removable roof - the central section is a carbon fibre panel , and the rear section can be folded down or left locked vertically in a "targa" configuration! (Reckon it can take about a minute tops to put back together in the rain...)

Quote from thestar.com (article about TVR in Maylasia)

This particular TVR has been marketed as a "grand tourer,'' and going topless is a breeze. Removing the carbon fibre roof is a fully manual job and happens real fast once you get the hang of it. Bend a couple of arms and it's off, then tuck it into the trunk.

It might look like CF but it certainly doesn't feel like it (weighs a frikkin ton).

I'm sure if it were made of CF it'd be about 1/3 the weight.

M@H - I still don't believe it is. Forgot to ask this morning - will check this evening when I pick my car up from servicing (I hope).

I still reckon its CF.. its really not that heavy when you compare it to an S roof for example.. I reckon the whole Chimaera roof weighs less than one half of an S roof.. (which is fiberglass)

Cheers,
Matt.

Ah! - so there is doubt! I could be right after all. M@T - is the wedge roof also CF? I think they weigh about the same as my Chim - i.e. heavy! That's why I thought they were glass fibre, but made to look like CF on the inside just for aethetic purposes.
