Years ago I bought an exchange diff for a whining RS2000 - came with a 3 month warranty, within 6 months it was as bad as the previous one!

Why only 3 month warranty? I'd want 12 months. Just my 2 penny-worth.

I've had a couple basically wear out, and they do wine and make all sorts of interesting noises for an amazingly long time before they finally let go. But I imagine a 'good' diff might wine anyway if the preload is wrong?

this is off the thread a bit (sorry) but on the subject of diffs....
I notice a bit of a kerchunk off mine after clumsy clutch operation or being a bit heavy footed on the gas. Does this spell trouble (he asked with clenched teeth)

I've got something like this, except mine happens most times I either go between acceleration or deceleration, or stop moving then start again. I think it's either a loose or worn UJ on the prop shaft, loose diff bushes (letting the diff move) or a driveshaft thing. Also it happens when I put the car in gear. It's like the slack is been taken up. Mines less of a kerchunk though and more of a low thud!! Must get it on some ramps and have a nosy around!

Little bit is normal, but it can get a lot worse if you have badly worn transmission, loose diff mounts or knackered diff bushes. Should be checked during routine servicing, but if it gets dramatically worse between services get it checked out just to be on the safe side.

don't forget that the 'kerchunk' may in fact be the exhaust hitting the underside of the boot (no joke) if your mountings are worn/fallen off. Sounds unbelievably simple until I checked under me own smooth purring diff....(not) Tant

i suspected mine was on the way out about a year ago.

just got it replaced after the whine started at very low speed. it's difficult to judge this because the change is so gradual. however after driving 200+ miles i noticed a ringing in my ears!

can now hear the fancy stereo i fitted, ( which makes it worthwhile in itself! ), and it maybe that the ringing in my ears was due to me turning up the stereo to try and hear it....

just drove 250 miles and only the wind noise to sort now........

much less tiring to drive now though.

i don't know the details, as my specialist fitted it, but the recon was about 600 quid.

edited to add that i have a 4L ( but don't know if this makes any difference. )

You have a 93 Chimaera, it will almost definately be fitted with a GKN diff. A couple of points: Are the two types interchangeable and are the ratio's the same ? Surely it can't be a straight swap.
shpub any thoughts ?

The BTR one will fit but the body will need to come off and the chassis changed, the prop shaft modded, the speedo sensor arrangment modded and so on....

They are not interchangeable in practice.
