how do I get the gear knob off?
Discussion
I need to get the centre console out and fix the door release .. I think the cable on the passenger side has snapped or gone doo-lally... tried twisting but its tight.. didn't dare apply any real force without confirming approach!
Small grub screw @ the front (nearest radio) of the ball. It's located right at the bottom.
definitely a tiny grub screw on the front of the door relese knob ... is it defintiely the same for the gear knob?
When I removed the central console I left the gear knob in place. Its gaiter was just tucked under the console, not glued in place. Previously it had just been tacked with a few spots of glue which didn't seem to make much difference. perhaps you can get away without removing the gear knob?
Have you checked what's happening at the door end of the cable yet? That's the end with the adjustable stop and it is much easier to get at.

ah ... that old problem. (I've bought cars off mates in the past. Guilttriptastic!) my Dad flogged an ageing Peugeout 504 to a friend ... bloke complained that it was running a bit rough a few days later. Embarassed, Dad peered under the bonnet in the station carpark and noticed that the new owner, Mr Spoons, had obviously been poking around and had failed to reattach one of the spark plug caps leaving the car running on three cyclinders. Hope yours is as simple a fix!
I recently changed my gear knob for a Leven one. To remove the it all I did was twist and it unscrewed, first the knob, then the flange / trim below.
The door knob definitely has a grub screw but on my Chim there wasn't one for the gear knob.
Maybe you should check for the presence of a grub screw, using a small mirror.

That is the same model as mine - 1994/1995 Chimaera L Reg...
As I say, mine did not have a grub screw, but i checked before hand using a small mirror (An old wing mirror does the trick).
It was quite tight, but I did not need to apply excessive force - it probably had never been previously removed!.
Hope this helps

I had this problem after taking my console off at the weekend. All gear knobs are screwed onto the gear stick. All door release knobs have a 1.5mm Allen screw at the bottom facing forward.
You do not need to remove either to take off the console. But the problem is quite likely the other end. There is an inspection hole covered with some carpet velcro'd in place. Have a look here first and check that the solderless nipple is in place and tight.
