Chim running rich & engine struggles with AC
Discussion
Hi all
Have an issue with my chim running quite rich. Not long since had a 12k service and the guys also picked up on it. It’s running an emerald ECU so they suggested to take it to julez who does a lot of emerald Tvr conversions. He’s about 2 and a half hours away and I don’t really have the holidays to go and take it and pick it up. I have 3 maps - MOT, “normal” and track and I always just leave the map in the normal mode as did the previous owner.
My limited thinking is that the normal mode wouldn’t have been mapped to run rich at all so I’m thinking there may be something wrong with the car rather than the map itself? The spark plugs have been done and they were quite fouled up before they was changed, it’s got an electronic distribution so I don’t think it’s that although I’m not to sure when the leads where last changed. Could it also be the 02 sensor that could cause this issue? It’s had the old sensors blacked off on the 2 banks and just has 1 at the bottom of the engine where both exhaust banks meet.
It’s also been installed with aftermarket aircon which is great and blows ice cold air however when I turn it on and can hear it kick in, the engine starts to become really hesitant at idle fluctuating the revs dropping from around 800 to 400 where it feels like it has a potential to stall. It’s not the end of the world because most of the time the roof is off anyway but it would be nice to have on and not worry.
If anyone has any suggestions or similar experience with the rich running it would be great to hear from you. If not I will try and get it booked with julez or a local mapper to try and diagnose any issues if anyone knows anyone in the north west that has any experience with emerald ecu’s
Thanks

Unfortunately things like this usually end up with it going back to the mapper, if all the basics look ok and a specialist has recently cast their eye over it.
Any idea who fitted the Emerald?
I think it was Mat Smith who fitted it and then mapped by kits and classics. It was installed 2017 if I remember correctly. Any idea who fitted the Emerald?

If it was mapped by Kits and Classics that is Joolz. I'd drop him a message and see if he has any suggestions, I'm sure with his experience and knowledge of Emerald he could point you in the right direction of a few things to look at.I would not rule out an air leak. I bought an inexpensive smoke tester from eBay. I have used it on 2 cars now. My friends Chimaera had got steadily worse running over the years. We put the smoke tester on it and it was coming out everywhere. We fixed all the leaks and he thinks it has not run better.

Are you sure on the three maps? Mine from Joolz has
Over fueling for pops and bangs (towards the driver)
Normal (middle)
MOT/Motorway (away from driver)
Yeah, mine is the same as you with pops and bangs being the track map.Over fueling for pops and bangs (towards the driver)
Normal (middle)
MOT/Motorway (away from driver)
Although I would like the pops and bangs in replacement😂
Do you still have both 02 sensors on each bank of the exhaust or just the one? Not sure if it was done as part of the ECU upgrade or not.
