Stepper motor cleaning advice...
Discussion
Do you have rovergauge? If so then you can use it to clean a stepper.
All switched on but not running and RG connected.
Disconnect the stepper and remove. Reconnect the stepper and loosely wrap it in some rag. Select idle 'close' on RG which will wind the plunger out of the stepper until it is completely out. The rag is so the plunger and spring don't escape.
With it in bits you can get a much better clean.
To reassemble you hold the plunger in against the spring and at the same time select idle 'open' on RG which will wind the plunger back into the body. Get it well in as you don't want the plunger to bottom out in the housing before the stepper is tightened down.

"RoverGauge is a graphical display and diagnostic tool that reads runtime data
from a Lucas 14CUX engine management system. The 14CUX was paired with the
Rover V8 engine in Land Rover vehicles from 1990 to 1995, and also in sports
cars made by low-volume automakers (TVR, Morgan, etc.) throughout the 1990s." Link here
You'll need a cable too to connect it to your car's diagnostic port. There's usually some for sale in the classified ads.

Few days ago, I have cleaned the stepper but once plugged back I have done a mistake and I selected "close" again...The spring and the plunger have flew in the engine bay. Hopefully, if I have 2 left hands, there are small :-). I managed to grab the 2 pieces inside the V but I was not proud.
Purchased a new stepper motor:

Found part number cross reference and seems direct replacement and will let know how I get on with it.
