First of all, no the battery isn't included - sorry - but I thought I'd offer up these parts as someone might find them useful. I bought my car a couple of years ago and initially it had the battery in the boot. The setup was OK sitting just underneath the boot latch but it was awkward putting the targa top in and out with the big battery in place plus I wanted to put the car back to an original state as possible with the battery back in the passenger footwell.

I'm sure someone would find these parts useful and with some minor adjustments to the bracket and an appropriate battery it would be a good mod.

The free parts are:
  • Cables are 3.3m and 4m each and there are a couple of places that had cuts in for some reason. I've tidied these up in the pictures and they didn't cause me any issues.
  • The orange tie down strap I have somewhere in the garage...
  • The aluminium bracket
  • The battery terminal connectors in the pic
These parts are free to a good home and there is absolutely no warranty with them.

Please PM me if you are interested and the new owner to collect from the south Manchester region.
(I can't seem to upload the image right-way-up!)

You've very likely increased the starter motor voltage during cranking by fitting the battery up front

That 35mm cable is unlikely to be up to the job

Example.....Starter motor is of the 2KW gear reduction type

Watts = Volts x Amps

2000 Watts = 12 Volts x 167 Amps

This calculation is made before allowing for the initial current draw of the starter motor when it first starts turning the engine, the initial current draw of the starter motor could be anything from 1.5 to 3 times that calculated using its wattage rating

This is better @ 50mm

Hi, message sent, ignore Penny, I'm sure you didn't come here with your generous offer to get a lecture on cable sizing? wink

I appreciate you've clearly stated "collect" but would you be prepared to chuck it all in a box and Hermes/Yodel if I covered all costs and a little extra?

(if not, just how far South of Manchester are you please?)

No problem if you can't find the strap, I have one.

35mm cable works fine on my S3, okay it's a smaller engine but for the few seconds it's in major use (starting the engine) I'm happy to risk it on my Griff smile

Wasn't meant to frighten people away from such a generous offer, thought it worthwhile mentioning about cable sizes due to so many DIYers using incorrect cable

Surely someone will be along shortly to take the cable and bracket off your hands

Not a problem and the box of bits is on its way to Phillpot. Hopefully it will be of use with a bit of fettling and tidy up of the bracket.

Thanks for the calculations. I did know about the power losses over longer cables but the setup did work reasonably well with the big truck battery. Moving the battery back into the original position with shorter leads did give the starter a bit more ummph. Better still was to treat the original cables to a good clean and fresh clamps too. Since moving the battery position the footwell was too small for the truck battery (I keep it as a jumper battery or spare) and so I use my old diesel VW Golf battery that's coming up to 12 years old now. Been working fine all year and it's so old the indicator circle has lost all colour. It'll do for now and I'll keep it on a maintenance charge over the winter.

Ok then, this explains things

Anyway, here's a link to a nice Voltage Drop Calculator should you ever need one, it can be found halfway down the page

Good news that your starter operation has improved since moving the battery

Find that really funny about the battery condition indicator being worn out, wonder what the manufacturer would think if you were to question it with them, may get a free battery out of it, 12 years is good publicity for them

I like this place, always good to hear of parts being moved around the TVR community, to be used by a fellow TVR owner.
Phillpot is always ready to help others with experience gained through many years of TVR ownership, it's nice to know the parts are going to a good home. thumbup
