I’m sure it’s all been covered on here before so apologies, but.... what’s the difference?
I know the 3s are the outgoing type and the 5s are the more recent equivalent/replacements.
Are they similar, better, worse, etc? Different tread pattern?
I have 16” and 17” rims so ‘original’ sizes aren’t for me.
Interested in facts, opinions or experiences. Thanks.

I would go 5 as very rarely does tyre development go backwards. Plus as the 3 is being 'run out' you're more likely to have actually new tyres.

Interestingly the 5’s have a stiffer shoulder than the “ much loved 3’s “ which will suit our cars I’d say.

I have a TVR owner coming over to try my set of Rainsport 3s on his car next week.

He was concerned about the ride quality of 45 profile tyres on 17 inch wheels, compared with the 55 or 60 profile of the standard 15/16 set up. I think he will be happy, but I do wonder if that is because of the softer sidewalls.

He is likely to buy Rainsport 5s if he does go that route, so we may get an early report that way.

It’s exactly that Anthony. According to the blurb only the shoulder is stiffer so hopefully still the lovely compliant ride.
I ran too much camber on the fronts for about a week, inside edge is bald which shows how soft the 3’s are.
It says replacing the much loved 3’s
I’m not the only one who adores them then. smile

Have them on Tamy and Suni. Euro tours, winter driving and trackdays.

We've just asked our local tyre place to source Rainsport 5s so hopefully will have them on the car soon. We're replacing the 22 year old Bridgestones but it's been off the road for most of the last 16 years.

You have beaten “my record”. My pre cat was off the road for 13 years.

I will be interested in your opinion on the rain sport 5’s once you have done a few miles on them.

Well I'm the person referred to by Anthony and am just back from seeing and trying his 17" wheel + RS3 tyre setup.

Most impressed with the comfort levels - better than expected. It looks like I'm in for some expense now - new wheels and tyres! Didn't push the handling as roads were damp and not my wheels but car definitely drove very well on them with none of the tram lining I get with the Toyo's.

As the RS3s are going out of production it looks like the choice will be between the RS5s and the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5s. Both get very good revues but the Goodyears seem to rate a little higher on comfort. If I end up with the RS5s will post impressions asap. Will also comment on Goodyears if that's the way I go

Just wheels to consider now bit more choice than with tyres so more brain ache in sight trying to decide.

Got to say what a gent Anthony is - all ready for me when I arrived, changed the wheels with very little input from me and provided coffee what more could you ask for.

Thanks Anthony

For some reason the 45 profile on 17" front wheels caught the body work on mine
I found that the 40 profile made the tyre look to low profile .

I have 205/50/16 on the front and 23/45/17 on the rear , they look perfect and fill the arch a bit more ..No rubbing etc .

You can try my 215/45 17s if you like Daz, while they are not on the car. My guess is you went for 225/45 17.....they catch on my car.

Some great deals on RS5 tyres from Demon Tweeks on ebay using code PAID20 at the mo. Not 100% if they have Chimaera sizes but if you have 16" fronts they have 205 55 R16 91V for £38

just edited as 205/55/16 would give a 25.4mm difference in diameter over standard 205/55/15 which may be too much.

Finally got through finding a wheel tyre combination I could actually buy as wheels with correct size and offset for TVR seem to be difficult.

Settled on old favourites SP12 from ACT - 7x17 front and 8x18 rear which is bigger than i was originally thinking.

Tyres are Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 at 215/45/17 front and 245 40 18 rear which from all I've read should be OK - might have to raise suspension a little. Went with the Goodyears as could get the sizes with reasonably low load ratings so fingers crossed it will ride OK.

All due in on Thursday so y Friday I will know if it is happy bunny time or don't tell the wife how much it just cost to make the car less comfortable.

Why not?

Mine does, all the time. It is great. If she likes it and is on board with it, then I have free hand to invest time and money on it.

If she wasn't on board, then resources would be difficult. I encourage her to use it often as possible.

Wife only goes in the car under protest hence the purchase of more modern tyres in an attempt to get rid of the crashing of the T1-Rs.

On the plus side she is accompanying me on the Drive Espana TVR trip in April so not so bad.
